Report: Hammers turn to Saints for loan

|

According to Mail Sportthe Hammers are looking at the possibility of a loan move for Southampton centre-back Jannik Vestergaard.

David Moyes is desperate to strengthen his defence after conceding 62 goals last season and looks set to miss out on Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski despite a £35m bid.

The Danish player isn’t in the plans of Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl and could see the move as a way to get more game time.

The 28-year-old could bring much-needed experience and quality to the Hammers defence.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach man featured in 19 league games last term and has played 45 minutes so far in 2020-21.

Vestergaard joined Southampton in an £18 million deal two years ago when Mark Hughes was the manager and has also been linked with Leicester City. He appeared to fall out of favour when Hasenhuttl took charge.

Last month Vestergaard has insisted he wants to remain at St Mary’s and fight for his place in the Southampton squad this season.

Speaking to the Danish outlet bold.dk, he said: “I must not hide the fact that there have been periods when it seemed that I should not continue.

“I was also close (to leaving) this winter, but in the communication with the club, they made it clear that they did not see our collaboration ending.

Getting really depressing now ,and that’s saying something with the last 5/6 seasons we have had…….just nothing at all going on ….no bids at all even though they say 3 are active wich I think is absolute rubbish…what do we bid then the club who’s player we want just Dosnt say anything for weeks on end ….what they doing..apart from airing there dirty laundry on talk shows…

I think the truth is nobody wants to come to West Ham. Its a sad state of affairs when Burnley, Celtic and Watford all seem like better options. On our current state we’re somehow actually weaker than we were last year too!
