Rice will take his time …and avoid injury

Declan Rice is likely to seek time beyond this international break to decide whether he he intends to commit to England or the Republic of Ireland.

Stories have emerged in the mainstream media today that he wants to settle his club contractual position  before making up his mind on an international status.

But in reality the player  has little to gain from making a fast decision on such an important issue at this stage.

And there is the added risk that should he do so he could return from international duty with an injury that could interrupt his progress at club level.

Ireland face games against Austria and Boznia and Herzegovina whilst the Three Lions head into action against Croatia and Spain but it would be a surprise if the 19 year old will be involved with either country at this point .

Club sources claim that contract talks are continuing and that they have little bearing on the young man’s international position.

Agree with you totally PB. Added are the commen s in June, no decision to make, a very proud moment, brought a tear to his eye, kissing the badge etc etc. it’s not like he didn’t know he could play for England before those friendliest at the end of last season .

I think young Dec is a fantastic player and I really hope we can get his contract sorted out sooner rather than later. Playing for your country should be something to be extremely proud of. You either want to play for them or you don’t. To say you want to pick and choose who you play for comes across as being arrogant. Who is to say Southgate will pick him anyway! If he’s represented the Rep of Ireland, (doesn’t matter if they were only friendlies) he should stick with them.

Northern Ireland play Austria and Bosnia. The Republic play Denmark and Wales. At least that’s what my tickets say.
