Sakho moved to the Roazhon Park from West Ham in a two-and-a-half-year deal in January 2018 but only managed to score three goals in 16 matches across all competitions.
The 30-year-old could not secure a regular spot in Julien Stephan’s team and was loaned to Turkish Super Lig club Bursaspor in August 2018 where he spent the entire 2018-19 campaign.
In Turkey, he scored another three goals in 20 Super Lig appearances was not enough to save Bursaspor from relegation and he returned to France.
Since the start of this season, Sakho is yet to play a competitive game
“Stade Rennais FC and Diafra Sakho have terminated the contract which bound them until June 2020. The club thanks Diafra for its participation and its unfailing professional and human commitment and wishes it the best in its future projects,” the club announced.
Sakho joined the Hammers in August 2014 from Metz for a transfer fee of £4,5m. He left West Ham for Rennes at the end of January 2018 having played 71 games in all competitions scoring 24 goals.
Obviously a talented player but unfortunately he didn’t have a strong enough mentality to succeed professionally within the game. Football is littered with footballers like him of ability but without the mental strength to withstand the pressures within the game. Also when a player moves to another country and is alone or hasn’t got a strong enough support network, it can be a recipe for disaster. I’ve always wondered how clubs manage these overseas players, especially if they are young. These football agents are often scavengers who prey on these well-paid footballers.
A little sad for Sakho as he was unstoppable for us for a while and gave us some good memories!
Totally agree, loved him as a player when he was at the top of his form. He is the sort of CF we are looking for now to play alongside Haller. Pity it has not worked out for him.
I liked him, shame he and his agent ruined it at our place.
On his day he was a handful.
