West Ham United have confirmed that Jonathan Hill has joined Scott Parker’s backroom team as assistant coach, bringing additional experience to the Hammers’ new management setup. Hill has previously worked alongside Parker at several clubs and arrives with a strong background in football analysis.
The appointment was announced on West Ham’s official website, with Hill joining Mark Noble, Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine on the coaching staff.
It was only after West Ham’s remarkable 3-3 draw against Cardiff City in Parker’s first match as Hammers boss that I discovered he’d added another member to his backroom team. And I have to say, I’m absolutely delighted.
Scott Parker Addresses West Ham Coaching Concern
I think having Mark Noble in the dugout is incredible. His passion for West Ham, understanding of the club and ability to connect with players should bring something invaluable to the dressing room.
But the one concern I had about Noble’s appointment was his lack of extensive first-team coaching experience.
That isn’t a criticism of Noble, far from it. I just felt Parker needed somebody alongside him with a strong background in coaching and tactical analysis.
By bringing in Jonathan Hill, he has immediately addressed what I considered a glaring gap in the backroom team.
Hill’s previous working relationship with Parker should also be an advantage. There is already an understanding between the two, rather than the new head coach having to build that relationship from scratch.
And nobody who witnessed the first half against Cardiff can be in any doubt that this West Ham squad will benefit from all the additional coaching and tactical expertise it can get.
The players clearly have ability, as the comeback demonstrated, but there is still an enormous amount of work to do.
For me, this is an encouraging appointment. Parker has retained the West Ham connections and passion that Noble and Potts provide, while adding another experienced football man to help with the coaching.
It’s early days, of course, but I’m pleased to see the new manager strengthening his staff so quickly.
It was announced on our website before the Cardiff game
Was refreshing to see a manager with answers to the problems we were having last night! It was pretty obvious that Magassa, Solomon, Morato and Taty needed replacing, but would Nuno have done that? Don’t think so! So pleased to see Mayers get on the pitch and do well too (as he usually does when given a chance), bodes well for some of our other academy players that clearly have ability.
Would also like to see a dedicated defensive coach added and a set-piece coach too as our defence was all over the place for the corners last night
