Summerville’s Release Clause – Source Lifts The Lid on West Ham Star’s Contract

As Martin wrote earlier West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville is again at the centre of more transfer‑market noise, with a new report claiming he has a £40m release clause that can now be activated following relegation. The same report suggests the clause would have stood at £70m had the Hammers remained in the Premier League.

The report goes on to say that the £40m would need to be paid up front, or the buying club could negotiate to pay over instalments for a higher fee.

The Netherlands international did have a relegation clause at Leeds United, which was set at £25m and West Ham activated this in 2024. A dual‑tier clause was largely viewed as highly improbable, yet Claret & Hugh reached out to one of our sources earlier today who has confirmed that the report is indeed correct and the clause IS present in his existing contract.

Summerville- surely will have this £40m release clause activated any day

Summerville had been publicly valued at around £50m by West Ham, a valuation that seemed reasonable for a 24 year‑old who has already proven himself in the Premier League and post his performances for Netherlands in the World Cup is now being mentioned as one of Europe’s most dynamic young wide forwards.

Interest in Summerville remains strong. Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, PSG, Fulham and Roma have all monitored his situation, though wages seem to be a stumbling block for some of those clubs mentioned. Reports suggest he is seeking £100k – £115k a week.

It is however surprising, with the latest news surfacing, that the £40m relegation clause has not been activated instantly by multiple clubs.

Having now returned from World Cup duty it is widely expected that Summerville will be the next departure from West Ham, as the transfer window progresses.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

That’s a shame, his value would have gone through the roof with his world cup performances

Release clause or not we need more than £59 million

As West Ham are paying 10% per annum on their current debt being paid up front and retiring debt means there is far less difference between the contract release and a higher amount with payments over time. To meet the release clause clubs will need to find forty million down the back of the sofa (or finance it) plus find another twenty five million over the life of the player’s contract in wages. If anyone does bite expect the medical to be very exhaustive.
