Gabriel Pereira emerges on West Ham’s defensive shortlist

It is rumoured that Gabriel Pereira has emerged as a new name on West Ham’s defensive shortlist, and the numbers behind a potential deal show why he fits the club’s new recruitment model under Nils Koppen.

The 26-year-old Brazilian has been outstanding for FC Copenhagen, establishing himself as one of the Superliga’s most complete centre-backs, and clocked up 26 appearances, one goal and three assists last season.

Contract, wages and valuation

Pereira is currently under contract with Copenhagen until June 2029. His salary is understood to be in the region of £12,000–£15,000 per week, well within West Ham’s wage structure.

While there are inevitable links due to Koppen’s brief spell at FC Copenhagen, it should be remembered that he is a defender he inherited rather than recruited. Ironically, the Brazilian defender formerly played for Pablo Felipe’s previous club, Gil Vicente, who have a 10% sell-on clause, yet they were there at different times.

Sources in Denmark suggest Copenhagen value the defender at £20m, yet would likely entertain bids below this. For West Ham, that represents a realistic investment and is well within budget.

Pereira was formerly linked to Sunderland and Burnley in the last summer transfer window.

Central defence remains a priority

With Axel Disasi returning to Chelsea and the futures of Jean Clair-Todibo and Max Kilman uncertain, central defence is an area that requires attention. Nuno wants at least two additions, with academy youngster Ezra Mayers expected to also be in and around the first team this season.
