Eight million euros – about six million pounds – would fund another late window acquisition for West Ham’s under populated Championship squad, should they accept a bid made for one of their former first team ‘stars’ who has now fallen down the pecking order.
Compared with the £35 million they reportedly paid just three years ago, accepting such a modest bid would create another big figure in the ‘losses’ column – even allowing for amortisation, over ten million pounds – but it gets one big problem out of their hair for good, rather than simply kicking the can down the road with another subsidised season – long loan.
Edson Alvarez nears the exit door
The offer from Olympiacos for Edson Alvarez will be tempting, considering Alvarez is reportedly is the latest player to down tools and demand an exit, so accruing a cash payment in exchange for his departure is at least a step in the right direction. According to the 4thofficial.net:
“West Ham United are trying to get Edson Álvarez out of the door before the late-August transfer deadline, with Olympiacos offering €8 million for the Mexican midfielder and Real Sociedad proposing a loan.
According to [journalist] César Luis Merlo, no agreement has been completed. Álvarez is considering both options, although staying in elite European football is understood to be his priority. His West Ham contract runs until June 2028.”
Get him gone. Easy to say when it’s someone else’s money but many fans, like me, will be sick of hearing of players not willing to fight for the club that has made them millionaires.
Better to have young up and coming talent or mature ‘stalwarts’ who actually want to fight for the shirt, for their team mates and for a result.
Just to be clear, as there seems to be some confusion, but the transfer window does not end on September 3rd or late August, it is as it has been all summer, September 1st at 11:00 p.m. plus a 2 hour grace period. Regardless, for 12 weeks it has never looked like West Ham have any intention of putting together a strong challenge for a return to PL football, and it still doesn’t. One thing the might want to look at is the wording of future contracts, specifically the “down tools” part.
Will there be enough players left at the club to still be able to field a team or are we going to have to ask the kit man, the tea lady and the injured Tomas the Tank Engine to play against Watford? It looks like we are doomed!
How many of our games has Kretinsky actually attended? He’s more interested in spreadsheets than team sheets. It’s time to bring Amanda Staveley on board with new money, energy and new ideas. She was a visual presence at Newcastle matches and showed some enthusiasm, unlike our current owners!

Totally agree NorthDEV There are so many mugs who think Kretinsky is a really great guy , the only difference between him and Sullivan is that he isn’t a grubby little man and more of a serious business person. And he doesn’t stick his nose in when hiring of players or managers. And why would he, because as you say he has never attended a game. Which is why we have ended up with Nuno! Who in their right mind would give this man a job after the disaster of last season.
Staveley has been open about making money but as you say she takes an interest in the club and fans and most supporters who have had any dealings with her have been positive.
All Kretinsky is interested in is money and real estate he has done nothing for West Ham. And he created the whole Staveley bid came about because he announced he would be purchasing the gold shares in early June and just didn’t bother doing it. Which is why Staveley bid. I doubt she will be successful but I hope so. If people want to criticise her I don’t mind but the comments just seem to be comments on the fact that she is a women or attacking her looks.
100+ international appearances for Mexico, a lot of them as captain, player of the tournament award at CONCACAF last year, but apparently he’s not good enough to play second tier football for the Hammers? Looking at Saturday’s abysmal performance we need someone with a bit of nous in midfield. Spend a bit of energy trying to keep him onside rather than trying to sell him cheap.
My question is how come Magassa who joined in August 2025 as a young prospect, is not now ready to step in at Championship level to replace Alvarez? Nobody is going to convince me that Magassa with his footballing pedigree would not now be ready to step into the 1st team as a DM, if he had received the kind of elite (for want of a better word) coaching that players at this stage of their careers need.
Koppen is meant to ensure continuity, so why is he not ensuring Magassa stays and is properly coached because the club see a future for him. What is Noble doing?
Last point: what is going to happen to the careers of Casey & Golambeckis who are never playing and are not receiving the elite coaching they need to test them and help them progress? NES is not taking the time to develop youngsters but is buying ready-made instead, the U21 coaches are not going to train them. So who is?
Here is another financial black hole draining millions from the club. All the money spent on Magassa to date will be wasted while he should easily be ready and raring to go, to play in the Championship and replace Alvarez saving millions and growing as a player to perhaps become a good box-to-box midfielder – rare and expensive.
Get a new manager and see what he can do rather than ditch the players he should be called Gloomo not Nuno he doesn’t look like he is enjoying himself or wants to be here and that will transmit to the players, Bowen is a great player but quite even tempered rather than energetic we need new leadership at every level of the club that have some dynamism.
It is a pity he is not an elite human being. No respect for the contract he signed, just another foreign mercenary. Another of Steidten’s over priced imports who never wanted to be at West Ham in the first place. Thanks Tim.

How can you say that we’re better off getting rid of an international captain, who had a really good world cup and cost us over 30million, for only 6million? Instead we should play our youth? Our youth are proving to be far from ready. They aren’t good enough. Nuno is a dreadful man manager and is/ has alienated half our team. We have absolutely nothing as far as defensive midfielders, so Nuno has fallen out with Alvarez and Magassa.

Maybe all season tickets should return the tickets- claiming a full refund due to misleading terms- we don’t have to sell- money re invested, ummmm don’t see much of that. Nuno is clearly the problem for many, it wouldn’t be bad if the ones staying actually looked convinced but they don’t. I seriously can’t see how he was kept on – it wasn’t just relegation it was the terrible tactics from playing players out of position- falling out- defending 1-0 or in some cases 2-0. Slow starts, riddled by mistakes , no pace – Nuno’s answer a pub player at over 20m and a sulky Argentinien at even more. Can anyone really claim to see any team improvement in 30+ matches?
Agree Simon. Two biggest issues to solve at WHU are Kretinsky and Nuno. Both incompetent and need to be replaced urgently.

Not sure where the anti Alvarez rhetoric originates from, but his management have completely refuted this. They released a statement stating he’s injured, hence nit training as normal. He’s allegedly bought a house within the local area and intends to stay at the club and help in a promotion campaign?!
