West Ham have begun the process of unofficially deciding which players will be allowed to leave the London Stadium at the end of the season as the club looks to raise funds for the summer transfer window.

The Hammers’ finances are said to be in poor shape, with Claret & Hugh being told that the club will “need to sell before buying anyone.”

As a result, several players are now deemed surplus to requirements — and C&H understands that Edson Álvarez has already been informed he is free to find a new club.

The news will come as little surprise to the Mexican midfielder’s representatives, who reportedly saw the writing on the wall following Graham Potter’s appointment as manager.

There is believed to be no shortage of interest in Álvarez, though clubs are expected to offer less than the £32m West Ham paid Ajax for him nearly two years ago.

At his peak, Álvarez came close to securing a £50m move to Manchester United at the start of this season, but an injury sustained at the Copa América scuppered the deal.

Following a below-par campaign for the Hammers, the 27-year-old has seen his market value drop significantly — making him one of several high-profile names who could be sold to fill the transfer coffers.

How can the coffers be empty! They pay a peppercorn rent but redeveloped Upton Park with loads of expensive properties, where has that money gone, surely that was Club money?

iI believe that Sullivan or Gold took some back from a loan from their personal money I read somewhere that Sullivan remortgaged his house for the money But I have no idea how much it was for

  • Stuart Nolan says:

Alvarez is a good defensive midfielder better than anyone else in the team at this position just needs two hard working guys around him in the midfield that are not lightweight in tackle and work rate is as high as his to match

All rather depressing but getting rid of Alvarez, Kudus, Paqueta and Rodriguez for at least £100m and saving £400k a week on wages makes alot of sense at this point. Unlikely to be any takers for JWP given his wages but must ensure we have better options next season.

  • Al says:

Yeah let’s sell him and kudus while their stock is low. Let’s keep training cone JWP as well great business.

    Sullivan out.

  • D says:

Great let’s ship out Alvarez and keep the midfield general JWP!!!

This manager has to go he is a joke.

I can only think someone has put a large bet on us to be relegated.

  • Joh Harrison says:

Glad you mentioned the injury. Easy to forget. It has slowed him down and he has not regained his former pace. What would once have been a well timed tackle now becomes a foul. The player Tim Steidten brought in was, like Kudus, excellent. But these things happen. I hope the era of West Ham being able to attract players like this is not over.
