Nuno Continues Squad Assessment
Nuno Espírito Santo has begun a thorough assessment of his squad, kicking off earlier this week with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Colchester United. That process continues on Saturday with a trip to Roots Hall, where West Ham will face Southend United as preparations ramp up for the new campaign.
A cluster of senior players, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Crysencio Summerville, Edson Álvarez and El Hadji Malick Diouf, have all been granted extended leave following their World Cup involvement. However, the growing expectation is that each of them could be heading for the exit in this summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, Jean-Clair Todibo remains absent after reportedly refusing to play, and it’s understood he has no place in Nuno’s long-term plans.
Plenty Of Work Still Ahead
Add to that the contrasting fortunes of James Ward-Prowse, Maxwel Cornet and Niclas Füllkrug, all of whom featured against Colchester United, with Cornet and Füllkrug both finding the net, and it’s clear Nuno still has a huge amount of work ahead before the season officially kicks off in August.
Supporters are growing impatient as the build-up to the new season begins, with the expectation of some new faces and a few more departures.
Right now, though, updates are scarce. Transfer talk has dried up, and potential targets are proving difficult to pin down, especially after reports that James McAtee has no interest in dropping to the Championship to reboot his career at the London Stadium. It leaves Nils Koppen and the recruitment team with plenty of work to do and fans wondering when the next move will finally land.
Patience is a virtue!
Well said alans_devon_shire.
Some of the other comments on here are just embarrassing.
The only people moaning and trying to create stories from nothing are the ITK’s, Claret & Hugh included. The club is now being run in a professional way and properly, meaning there are no leaks from the boardroom about who we are in for and chasing & who we are offloading. Stories exactly like this one get written to try and generate interest and clicks because they have no other leaked information to write about. And as expected most people that comment here bite straight away. This article has been worded in a specific way to suggest the fans are getting frustrated, which is so far from the truth. The only people getting frustrated are the writers and ITK’s as they have no gossip to spread. Unlike the Sullivan era where David & Jack Sullivan, Karen Brady, Sean Wetwipe and certain agents used to leak any and every detail they could just to make it look like we were active and in for everyone while muddying the waters. It got to the point there was so much BS and contradictory rumours that no one knew what was true and what was just smoke and mirrors. I’ll tell you, I much prefer the situation the way it is right now, and it also shows just how badly our club was being run in the past. Long may this continue!

DK has said we want to keep as many as possible, and I’d guess discussions around that are ongoing. Maybe stuff like non-promotion clauses. We’ve got a sizable squad when you factor in the returning players and youngsters promoted.
In an ideal world, I’d like to keep more or less what we’ve got and add just 1 signing – Diasi. Let’s see.
What we got, got us relegated, adding 1 signing and we will not get promoted.
It was always going to be difficult after dropping into the Championship and as I expected some of the targets on the top of the list deemed to be the better players don’t want to sign. However if you don’t try you won’t know but this takes time, unfortunately something we don’t have a lot of!
Patience also runs thin !
I’m still feeling calm and patient with the situation. Before Sullivan fell on his sword my feelings were desperate thinking about a huge fire sale, really poor signings and another relegation battle. Compared to that things aren’t so bad.
If we can manage to hold onto our better players or most of we need some quality signings. The players staying will only give us one season in the Championship.
Why do we want to keep most of that which got us relegated?
Perhaps because we were playing quite well at the end of the season and averaged 1.4 points per match for the last 15.
New season same old bull …….
The season starts in 3 weeks, can see us being nearer the bottom than the top next season.
Give Koppen a chance, he’s only been in the job a week or so, and Nuno’s still assessing his squad, he hasn’t even had time to fall out with anyone yet?!
The rumours around Premiership players and internationals joining a championship club are ridiculous. The club hopefully is working on potential stars and maybe a older experienced head or two.
But the silence and inactivity is worrying especially when so many are likely to leave.
I’m fearing this mob are no different to the previous regime (maybe it is the old regime?). It wouldn’t surprise me if we hear the familiar ‘we tried’ mantra when our transfer window fizzles out
A loss at Southend and things will really kick off (and that’s not a pun).
Keep speculated signings low key but it would have been expected more movement this late in the day.
Pre season suppose to be a time of banding new players with old can already hear excuses.
A glorified training session at Southend Jeeps and you think “it will really kick off” if we lose….
😂😂😂
Welcome to the West Ham way.Last minute signings and no time to integrate new players. Its always the same.
Get a grip..
We moaned when stuff was leaked and now its being done quiet we get these posts which is absolutely ridiculous
100% agree, can’t win! Moan when it’s kept quiet, moan when info is leaked. Just can’t win!!
One player who was not listed on ex employee’s line up against Colchester was Magassa – any word why he didn’t play?
Agree
Not moaning about that at all.Do you actually have insight into what is going on in the background ?.My point was how do new players gel if they are signed at the death.
