For football supporters, Sir Geoff’s legacy is etched into history. A proud West Ham United icon, he remains the only player ever to score a hat-trick in a FIFA World Cup Final, a feat achieved during England’s famous 4-2 victory over West Germany at Wembley in 1966. His achievements helped define a generation and cemented his status as one of the greatest players the game has ever seen.

Today, Sir Geoff stands not only as a football legend but also as the last surviving member of England’s World Cup-winning team. As the years pass, his presence serves as a living link to the nation’s greatest sporting triumph, carrying with it memories that continue to inspire football fans across the world.
I’m too young to have seen Geoff play in person, but my dad was fortunate enough to watch him live on many occasions. Having read his autobiography, Last Boy of ’66, and watched plenty of footage of him over the years, I’ve come to appreciate just how important he was for both club and country. His record of 180 goals in 411 appearances for the Hammers between 1958 and 1972 speaks for itself.
The Freedom of the City of London is one of the capital’s oldest and most distinguished honours, making it a fitting tribute to a man whose contribution to sport extends far beyond trophies and records.

I was fortunate enough to see all of Geoff’s career and what a player he was starting out as an average wing half then being converted by Ron Greenwood to a centre forward and what a player he became . Amazing work rate and a top class finisher. But I will always remember him for his temperament. He never lost his temper and you wouldn’t believe not believe the physical challenges he had to withstand. A true gentleman too with time for everyone. The club should have honoured him more

A fan since 1964 I saw him in his pomp. Along with Moore, Brooking and Bonds- all of whom have a stand named after them.
On WHU – does he have to die before such an honour is made posthumously-

Got his autograph a few times in the 60s and saw him amongst the fans in the Boleyn South Bank doing his bit for the club. A true Legend.
Kalian Mbappe has also scored a hat trick in a world cup final playing for France in 2022 but sir Geoff is the only one to score a hat trick in a final as a player in the winning team. France lost on penalties
I think you have under estimated his goalscoring for West Ham Matt. I thought the total seemed low and looked it up, it’s actually 242 goals in 500 matches for West Ham
