West Ham Rewrite History With Record-Equalling Away Win

Last night’s victory hit the record books for West Ham as we demolished Lincoln City 6-0 at the ProAmpac Stadium. The comprehensive Championship victory saw the Hammers score through Dinos Mavropanos, Edvin Austbø, Jarrod Bowen, Pablo and a Tomáš Souček brace. The result equalled the club’s biggest-ever away league win.

For more than a century, West Ham’s record away league victory stood untouched. Back in February 1923, the Hammers beat Leicester City 6-0 in the old Second Division.

West Ham Equal 103-Year-Old Record

Now, 103 years later, that record has company. West Ham’s trip to Lincoln quickly became a one-sided affair after the hosts were reduced to nine men inside 23 minutes. The Hammers remained patient before exploding into life, scoring six unanswered goals and delivering one of the most dominant away performances in recent memory.

For travelling supporters, it was the perfect away day: six goals, a clean sheet and a place in the club’s history books.

More West Ham Records This Season

Other records have also been achieved this season, including the highest ever recorded attendance for a Championship game, 62,264 in our opening home game at the London Stadium versus Charlton Athletic. A record attendance for a Carabao Cup Round One game was also recorded when West Ham entertained Portsmouth in August, watched by 53,369 fans.

While the Lincoln result joins the record books and takes its place in history, whether it proves a turning point in the promotion race remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the 6-0 away victory now sits alongside the Leicester City 6-0 victory as our joint-biggest away league win in the club’s history.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

On TV last night they said that our previous visit to Lincoln, for a league match in 1957, resulted in a 6-1 win for West Ham. If true, I reckon that’s another record; consecutive scores of 6 at one venue
