Southampton could be without former Hammer Flynn Downes when they visit the London Stadium, although the midfielder is doing everything possible to make himself available.
This would have been a big, big game for Downes. Not only did he play for West Ham, but he is also a lifelong supporter who comes from a family of Hammers fans. There is little doubt he would have been desperate to feature against his former club.
However, Downes missed Southampton’s goalless draw with Bolton after damaging an ankle ligament against Norwich. Saints manager Tonda Eckert has admitted that facing West Ham is an ambitious target, although he told Hayters TV that it remains possible.
Downes Would Be A Big Southampton Loss
Don’t get me wrong, I still believe West Ham were right to allow Downes to leave.
The intense competition for midfield places at the London Stadium demonstrates why the move made sense for all concerned. Downes is nevertheless a canny operator and a very good player at Championship level.
He would certainly have wanted to play in this match and, if he cannot prove his fitness, I suspect Southampton will miss him considerably.
Cyle Larin’s condition could be even more significant. The striker was forced off during the first half against Bolton after suffering a problem following a collision, although Southampton are currently hopeful that he will recover in time.
Therefore, it would be premature to describe Larin as unavailable. However, if he suffers a setback during the week, losing their centre-forward as well as potentially being without Downes would leave the Saints severely weakened.
Three Straight Wins Would Make A Statement
West Ham have already beaten Southampton 4-1 this season, when Nuno Espírito Santo’s young team excelled in the Carabao Cup at St Mary’s.
The Hammers now have an opportunity to build upon the victories over Lincoln City and league leaders Swansea City. Beating Southampton would make it three consecutive wins and represent another impressive step forward.
I expect the South Coast club to be competing for a play-off place this season. Their injury problems may give West Ham an advantage, but overcoming another promotion rival would still constitute an important result.

The midfield players at West Ham now are totally different to the players we had while Downes was at West Ham but for Thomas Soucek. Flyn was a capable player and under different circumstances might have become a regular and stayed on. But with a team underperforming and needing to raise money to strengthen in certain positions, he was one of the few assets the club could move on for a good price.
