Twelve points in eleven days is something pretty special for West Ham fans to wake up to, after a scintillating performance sent Wrexham’s team bus, along with their deflated supporters, on a very long, no doubt very quiet journey back down the M4 in the small hours.
Truth be, as Hammers fans, we’d forgotten how this felt, such has been the procession of mediocre, joyless fayre served up by Lopetegui, Potter and early Nuno. The only six goal thrashings we’d witnessed were inflicted on us, not by us.
So if we revel in Friday night’s performance for the weekend ahead with the highlights on repeat, who can blame us.
It wasn’t just the six goals, it was the freedom of a side that seemingly played to each players’ maximum potential: The running, the passing, the movement – and the finishing. Outstanding. The fact that any one of about seven players could arguably have won the man of the match award spoke volumes for the team performance overall.

Difficult to be objective after everything finally clicked for Nuno, from his selection of a ‘stealth’ left back who looked supreme to the re-introduction of Taty instead of Pablo. Capitalfootball.co.uk provided a welcome bit of balance, lest we all get carried away:
“It had been nearly three years since West Ham last won four games in a row – but they have reached that marker to once again signal their intention not to hang around too long in the Championship.
They are back on top of the league – at least until tomorrow – and look more than capable of staying in and around the top slots in the months ahead…”
Amen to that. And of course, we know it is ‘only‘ the Championship; Enough of that. Last night both Nuno and his squad finally awoke, seemingly freed from their Premier League relegation hangover, and performed accordingly.
Putting six past Wrexham is only the start of it, and tougher defences will rock up at London Stadium.But the manager, the team and the supporters now have a pretty clear vision of what ‘excellence’ looks like this season. There’ll still be games when West Ham have to dig in and win ugly. We’ll still moan and groan and demand more – because that’s what we all do.
But just this weekend, for all the pain of being a West Ham United fan for the last couple of years, it is enough just to say ‘well done guys’ and enjoy how this feels. COYI!
