When West Ham signed Joël Veltman on a free transfer at the age of 34, I assumed we’d recruited an experienced and versatile defender to provide cover for Kyle Walker-Peters.
I’m starting to wonder whether we’ve actually signed his competition.
Veltman has impressed me massively. He looks every inch the seasoned professional: clever, composed and seemingly always aware of how to take the sting out of a situation.
We’ve already seen him use his wise old fox style of play to get the better of younger opponents, drawing fouls and managing situations which might otherwise become dangerous.
The statistics suggest there’s plenty of substance behind the old head too.
Veltman’s numbers make interesting reading
Veltman is averaging a remarkable 12.29 recoveries per 90 minutes for West Ham this season, with 25.8% coming in the opposition half.
He’s also producing 5.36 interceptions per 90, winning 59.7% of his duels and 60.3% of his aerial battles.
Watford provided perhaps the best example. Veltman made 10 recoveries and seven interceptions while winning all three of his aerial duels.

Walker-Peters has genuine competition
The passing figures aren’t spectacular. His 85.2% completion rate and 54.8% long-pass accuracy suggest that’s not where Veltman’s greatest value lies.
It’s the defending, positioning and experience that stand out.
In fact, I couldn’t help thinking during the Millwall game that Veltman was exactly the sort of character West Ham could have done with when things became heated and sticky.
Unfortunately he’s injured, and hopefully that absence isn’t a lengthy one.
Because while I originally viewed Veltman as Walker-Peters’ understudy, I’m not convinced that’s how this season will finish.
There has been nothing in his performances so far to suggest a 34-year-old footballer in decline. Quite the opposite. On the early evidence, he may find Championship football very comfortable indeed.
Walker-Peters might currently be quite fortunate that his competition is unavailable.
A vastly experienced defender, signed on a free transfer and already pushing strongly for a starting place? It’s just a shame he’s not 24.
