Commenting to the official site he said: “I’m very happy. I’m pleased we’ve got it sorted so I’m obviously looking forward to the seasons ahead. It’s going to be a big amount of time I’ve spent at the club and I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ve been here a long time now! I think with the business we’ve done over this summer and the players we had here before, I think we can go on to have a good season and seasons ahead. It’s all about trying to get better.

“I enjoy being here and my family does as well so I’m very happy I’m able to stay here.”

Another six years! Madness, we could have sold him to Everton for a very nice profit and got better…Another nail in Bilic’s coffin…

Just a gesture of trust to the player. If anyone wants to get him, they will just have to pay for him. Look at the way it went with Neymar, who was supposedly untouchable. Not that Reid is anywhere close, but nowadays contracts can be easily rescinded.

Why all those long contracts 6 years for a 29 year old and want even hive Collins a year. Reid is a ok CB not great and injury prone. So given him Guaranteed money until 35 when a bumper on current deal would have worked just add a year think he add 2-3 years left.
Collins van still defend and is fit who know of Reid at 35 did we not learn from Fonte. And with the likes of Rice and Ox and Burke coming up.
I don’t get it 4 year max. Didn’t get 5 years on Marko and 6 years at 29 going on 30 Christ we really are starting a Retirement club.
Reid loves it bc of he would have even been sold would have got 2-3 year deal not 6.So will be collecting when injured or done and doesn’t benefit to club all this talk of Contracts mean nothing and that don’t to the Club as much they do for a player especially when getting older
We are worried about Fonte and others being Ing Squad when older and handing out 6 year contracts. Shouldn’t even go over 5 and that is for youngsters.

I am sure there are specific clause and conditions in this new agreement which cover the aspects you mention (injury, decrease in pay for less appearance, etc), but we will not know the details of that. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter to me, because, as you say, Reid will either leave, or become a back up for the youngsters pushing to get a first team role.

I agree that six years is too long but sorry i cannot agree about the comments that he is just”ok”.He has been our best defender for a few seasons now and in my opinion would make a better captain than noble.

He got a bumper deal 18 months ago so I am surprised to see him get another one perhaps he has a contract that gives him like for like on the clubs top earners ? Whatever way it does seem like madness, he is a good defender no more than that and if his wages are ridiculous how are we ever supposed to offload him…

    • JRS says:

Right and already Injured. That’s why don’t give 6 year deals to anyone over 28 especially injury prone. And yes he is just Ok compared to defenders we have had and others. He isn’t Bonucci and he didn’t get a 6 year deal.
So be taking a spot on squad when he is 5tj choice behind Rice Burke Ox and whoever other CB we get.
Can’t offload Fonte and want to exetned that long. Just bad business have to think about our future so many cautionary tales about this stuff
