“Carroll may leave”

|

MoorethanTony Cottee reckons record signing, Andy Carroll, could move on if things don’t work out for him at Upton Park this season!

The former Hammers goal-scoring legend has given his frankest ever interview in the ClaretandHugh interview section of the MooreThanJustaPodcast, which will can be heard early next week.

“We have four fantastic strikers when they re all fit and whether AC will be happy as a sub I don’t know, but I doubt it,” commented Cottee.

“If, at the end of the season, he hasn’t got in as a regular, like Paul Goddard in my day, who couldn’t get past Frank McAvennie, or myself, and moved on – Andy may do the same.”

In the podcast, TC covers his own Irons days as a player, the Allardyce era and gives his assessment on this season’s “best since the turn of the century”squad.

He may well want to move on, but if any player has ever owed his club, then it’s AC. The return on our investment has been zero. He’d be an amazing impact sub if we can afford him in that role and he owes us a couple of seasons of graft, whether he’s in the first 11 or on the bench.

I do believe this is very much the last chance saloon for Carroll, not just at West Ham, but in general. He needs to prove he can play injury-free for the majority of a season.
West Ham have shown tremendous patience in him. If he has another injury this season that keeps him out for three or four months that’ll be it.
I think we can all agree that a healthy Carroll is a fantastic player to have and he has much more in his locker than just jumping up for headers and providing knockdowns for teammates. I can see him thrive playing under Bilic with teammates like Payet, Lanzini and Sakho.

If he stays fit and scores he will be in the team if not then it doesn’t matter

He should commit himself to this club for as long as the club want him. He owes the management for their patience and investment. So if He has only a bit part that’s tough, but he has no options, he’s under contract and will play or not as the manager desires. The same as any other professional.

It does matter as he has a very long contract signed at West Ham. So financially Carroll will impact our club for years to come. Question is how much of that outlay we may recover either by Carroll performing for us, selling him on eventually or getting some insurance money if he has to end his career prematurely due to persisting injury concerns.

About 26m in wages to him on a 6 year contract at 85k a week, which i believe is close to his weekly wage. Then factor in the 16-18m transfer.Worse case scenario we have invested about 45m in him over six years if he fulfills his contract on roughly the same wage.Damn, thats one hell of alot of money for a club like us with little to show for it so far! 😉
