EXCLUSIVE: DG reveals reason for Irons success

David Gold has told ClaretandHugh he’s finding it very hard to be objective about what’s happening at Upton Park this season but is starting to believe “we are becoming a decent team.”

And he explained: ” I sat through that match yesterday believing City must score but as we got closer and closer to the final whistle I started to believe but it’s hard when you have had so many disappointments in the past.

Speaking to CandH exclusively he said: “The defence kept a fabulous shape but lost it an one stage and it became very edgy. But we got it back together and I found myself thinking we really were becoming a decent team…by which I mean a very good team!

“This is the same back four as we had last season yet it was a better defensive display than anything we’ve seen for a long time.

“You have to put that down to the manager and the way he is setting them up and improving them on the training pitch.

“Even though James Collins was only on for a few minutes at the end he knew exactly what job he had to do and what was required.”

But the co chairman revealed that it’s the incredible spirit and camaraderie in the squad which is responsible for the amazing performance.

He said: ” I can see it, feel it and touch it. The camaraderie is astonishing. The lads truly get along and the hugging, laughing and encouragement they give each other in the dressing room is brilliant – and once again that’s all down to Slaven.

“I really do have to believe that we have something pretty big going on here. I’m really starting to believe we are becoming a decent team although it is very early days.”

The downside to what is happening at west ham is the next match does not come quick enough.

Super Slavs Band of Brothers.I like,i like it a lot!

  • Radai Lama says:

Team spirit, confidence & belief in your own abilities.Get a team who believe in themselves & its massive.Long may it continue.Slav has really got the lads together big time it would appear.

There is no reason this team should loose its belief,
Let’s see what happens when we are 1 or 2 down one day and Slav has to get them going,
When you think how much Confidence getting Song back will add to the belief,
Just hope Zarate keeps his cool or he will join Alfitano,
There are players that turned us down now thinking they made a mistake,
I will be putting some of my winnings on us winning again but I bet the odds will be rubbish,
The defence now has some great players in front to hold the ball up and give them a break
That’s the difference and the tackling of Obiang is like having a mother defender

Bubs, we’ve seen them 2-0 against Leicester and they respond well. Not quite well enough, but better than we’d grown used to. I agree that once we add in Song (and who says he’s guaranteed a start when the team and doing this well without him?) we could be a fearsome unit.

We all know in our heart of hearts that it’s not going to last forever, but I’m just enjoying the ride. Slav’s just such a tactically astute, articulate and classy guy that it’s a pleasure to have him represent us. And the players seem to be genuinely having the time of their lives!

  • Michael Miller says:

He’s really criticising the BFS regime and the way he ran things – it’s pretty obvious that Bilic has the players onside – they seem to be buying in to his methods and way of playing – long may it continue!

    • StingRay Stewart says:

Sure he is having a little dig, especially when he said about it being the same back four as last year 😉

Been pro Slav from the off and seeing what he’s achieved in such a short space of time tells me, regardless of if we hit a bad or dodgy patch, he cuts the mustard and if he stays around long enough will be a legend. I think he will too because taking this very very special club into the OS and then into a position where we are challenging for serious silverware is a mouthwatering prospect for a guy with his work ethics, belief and ability. Don’t see why our run will end either we have enough talent on the bench now to cover injuries and to not have to play those who aren’t in form. We’re also waiting on Valencia, Song, Caroll and Ogbonna to return from injury right now! I’ve had a cheeky tenner on us for the title at a thousand to one anyway…..

Lol Jonny I like your style !!! I am also looking forward to seeing what we can do with Valencia and Song also in the running and what he does with Carroll. I was glad also to see one of the older boys Collins get a run out the other day, he looked good in the brief time he had doing what he does best winning a few headers and blocking attacks when we were under siege.
