Former Hammer Dean Aston has told Sky Sports News viewers this lunchtime that signing Jack Wilshere on a free transfer would be a waste of time for both West Ham and Wilshere himself.
Ashton said: “I think it would be a waste of time for the club and the player, it would put pressure on him straight away. Having had long-term injuries myself I think he would be better off going abroad to a warmer climate, slower, technical league where he can thrive.”
Former West Ham striker Sir Geoff Hurst also previously said in June that the club should not sign Wilshere.
Hurst told the Daily Star: “Wilshere is injury prone and you don’t want to sign players like that. We’ve already got Andy Carroll. Wilshere again for me is a complete no. There’s enough players in the world. West Ham don’t need to sign cast offs, injured players and players that are too old. For God’s sake surely we have enough money to buy a bit of quality.”
Good player but I agree we should not sign him imagine an injury and we will be paying him for nothing. That would be a waste of money & not business savvy. Nothing against Wilshire but I don’t think we should take the risk !
Dean Ashton and Geoff hurst both surprise me being ambassadors for our club and country, you wouldn’t think they would want to get involved with negative comments about England players. Not that I fully believe Geoff hurst would want to be quoted saying what he said, if he did say it, by a news rag like the daily star.
That’s the risk you take with any player. Look at Ashton himself. Wilshere played more games last season than any West Ham mid fielder and in some cases more than double. It seems he can now manage his game to avoid the injuries he used to get. He will still get injuries but so will every player. I believe the benefits out weigh the risks. COYI.
If his basic was £50k, with a £50k appearance add-on, it would make more sense. That should be the case for all players really.
Good luck with bringing that in mate.
He was fit and available most of last season, we need someone that can play no10 he wants to play for us unlike some others and he would be one of our own, he is as good or better than Payet at bringing players into the game, as a free transfer its deal of the century, we wasted more on the transfer fee for Huggil than his wages, if he has his salary structured around appearances or even if not £5m a season on a 2 year contract with an option on an extra 2 hard to see us going wrong he still has his best years ahead of him.
The big factor for me is that Jack Wilshere would be coming in on a free contract. If he had a £30m price tag then ….No.
I’m sure WHU would give Jack a contract that would have a clause built in with insurance against a long-term injury. For 25 plus games a season he would be worth it
What 32 said x2
Let’s not beat about the bush. Wilshere is a crock and always will be. If we sign him , he won’t make it to 20 premier league starts next season. With what’s happened in the past with the likes of Carrol and Dyer, surely West Ham should have learnt their lesson by now.
Played 62 games in the last 2 seasons.
