Moyes v Klopp: The Odd Couple

David Moyes and Jurgen Klopp have very little in common at first glance. While both the Liverpool and West Ham managers are likely to be out of a job at the end of this season, their approaches to football are distinctly different.

Klopp is a vibrant attacking manager known for employing numerous forwards and encouraging his defenders to push into midfield to support the attack. Moyes, on the other hand, is more reserved, both in personality and in his tactical ethos, which reflects his character.

Yet, these two experienced Premier League managers share a surprisingly good rapport and are known for their mutual respect, never speaking ill of one another. It’s intriguing to consider what their conversations might be like as one invites the other to the manager’s office for a post-match glass of wine.

Given their contrasting tactical styles, it’s hard to imagine they have much to discuss in terms of strategy. It’s also unlikely that the highly successful Klopp is seeking advice from Moyes, and it’s clear that Moyes isn’t adopting any of Klopp’s tactics.

Perhaps their relationship is simply a testament to mutual admiration, a bond between two long-serving coaches who recognise the perseverance and endurance needed to navigate the challenging world of football management.

Whatever the nature of their relationship, when Liverpool arrives at The London Stadium to play West Ham tomorrow, both men will be confident in their tactics. Win, lose, or draw, the one certainty is that there will be plenty of smoke being blown in the direction of the others backside.
