Lisbon turn down £40m for Carvalho

Sporting Lisbon have demonstrated how tough their stance is over a possible sale of Wiliam Carvalho.

Media reports in Portugal from A Bola claim that Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin Quanjian saw a £40 million bid for the midfielder turned down during over the last week.

The report says Lisbon were unwilling to do business because the club is trying to keep pace with Porto and Benfica in the title race.

Whilst the Hammers only bid around £25m to £30m last winter before a massive row broke out between the two clubs, this appears to demonstrate the difficulties involved in negotiating with the the Portuguese over a player they value at £38 million.

The row between the Hammers and Sporting led to a massive fallout between the two clubs which did nothing to help the game’s image with such insults as “the Dildo Brothers” being thrown at David Gold and David Sullivan.

West Ham and Sporting have since patched up their differences, but the Hammers boss David Moyes has shown little interest in the player.

  1. Too many people believe that you offer them some money, then they accept it and then you take the player leaving everyone smiling. Of course this shows the reality, where they will keep moving the goal posts, raising the price as they go.
I’m sure they are not the only unscrupulous club out there.

    • They are not unscrupulous they didn’t want to sell in this window, last summer was different they wanted 40 mil and Sullivan by his own releasing of that email showed we offered 22 mil, they are certainly not to blame for our bid not happening

  2. Obviously Carvahlo is out of Sullivan’s league if 40 million wouldn’t get him. Moyes showing little interest in Carvahlo as quoted, worries me.

    • Moyes wants PL experienced players who British. Has said it himsled many times. We wanted this players in PL couldn’t get them & we went to lower leagues bc we should stay in UK.
Which I’m all for Homegrown & need a mix. Like youth & experience.
But I worry with Moyes cutting of rest of Europe & world we are cutting off so much talent. Says he wants a British core to setup us up even if he doesn’t stay. I’m fine w that but can’t expect to get all British players.
Mario wasn’t a Moyes signing & he has been great. Hopes that would make Moyes more open but still seems all about UK.
And we need a mix & I think mindset will hurt us & keep our recruitment slower more expensive & keep us from getting great players from Foreign leagues.
Bid £25m for Allen but we couldn’t get a CDM all Jan & need one badly then pay £10m for Hugil nothing against him but needed CDM more. And plenty of talented ones out there for £20m or less could of got.
TBH I would of gone for Johansen over Cairney from Fulham. Like Cairney but not Durable like Moyes wants & Johansen is more Physical & plays CDM role or further up

  3. We will never be signing Carvalho (at his peak) and SL owner is pretty much just as bad as DS, the only one I feel any sympathy for is Carvalho he has been sold as many broken promises as we have.

  4. The player is currently under contract with SL until June 2020. He’s currently 25 and his value will be diminishing rapidly after this season. Therefore they will have to cash in and seeing as they have the chips, someone will overpay for him as he’s probably not worth more than 25 mill.

  5. Moyes will not show interest because he knows the player is out of reach financially.
