McAvennie: “Macari was my worst ever manager”

Frank McAvennie has hit back at Lou Macari declaring him to be the “worst manager with whom he ever worked.”

The striker was heavily criticised by the ex Hammers boss in recent a Moore than just  Podcast for not being a great trainer and not being fit.

But ‘Frankie Mac’ has made his feelings crystal clear declaring: “He was a terrible coach and to claim I wasn’t fit ahead of the match of the season against Stoke in which my leg was broken was awful.”

Macari told the podcast that he warned that the striker’s lack of fitness would be his downfall and appeared to suggest the clash with Chris Kamara which led to broken leg was because McAvennie wasn’t fit.”

But Supermac told ClaretandHugh : “That’s utterly ridiculous. The Stoke game was the first of the season and I’d done an entire pre-season and was totally fit. That was a terrible thing to say.

“And the truth is he never once spoke to me about my fitness levels – ever. What he had to sayast  on the podcast was ludicrous and way out of order.”

Frank says that what made it so much  worse was that Macari had been his hero when a player at Celtic but said: “From the moment he arrived at West ham I knew he was all wrong. His first words to us in the dressing room were ‘I’m gonna change you all as players.’

“We soon found out what he meant cos his entire philosophy if that’s what you can call it was based on running, running, running – how he ever became manager of the club I’ll never know. He was the worst with whom I ever worked.

“Everything was about gambling .He would always be asking for bets to be put on – he asked me a number of times. It was a dreadful time in my career.”

  1. Ah Macari. For some reason i only remember 1 match when he was in charge. We beat Middlesboro 2-0 at the Boleyn with Stuart Slater scoring one of the goals.Sticks in my head cos Justin Fashanu was introduced at half time to the crowd as our new signing.Strolled onto the pitch in a trench coat and waved to the fans, and that was his West Ham career done.
