Thousands of football supporters witnessed desperate attempts to revive a Manchester United fan from a suspected heart attack at the London Stadium yesterday during the second half.
Stadium medical staff performed CPR on the elderly away fan at the back of the Sir Trevor Brooking upper away end at the very top of block 220.
Paramedics performed resuscitation on the fan in the stands for over 30 minutes before he was stretchered away just before full time. West Ham fans next to the away section applauded medical staff who had worked in vain to save the rival fan.
The fan was taken away by ambulance but sadly he pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. Sometimes there are things more than important football and our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
Confirming the tragedy Met Police announced: “Unfortunately the Manchester United supporter who collapsed at London Stadium has passed away, condolences to his family/friends at this sad time”
Stadium operators LS185 said “All at London Stadium are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of a Manchester United fan, following last night’s Premier League fixture”
West Ham added their condolences by saying: “West Ham are saddened by the passing of an MUFC supporter taken ill during West Ham v Manchester Utd. The thoughts of the Club are with his family & friends.”
Manchester United added: “Everyone at Manchester United is deeply saddened following news one of our fans passed away after collapsing at yesterday’s game v West Ham.”
