West Ham United are expected to take another massive financial hit over the coming days, according to ExWHUEmployee.

According to Ex, the West Ham hierarchy could be set to terminate Maxwell Cornet’s contract by mutual agreement.

Another Costly Transfer Nears Its End

Although the Ivorian seems like he’s been around forever, he’s still only 29 years of age, and ordinarily one would hope there would be some sell-on value.

However, as with Niclas Füllkrug, West Ham are probably just going to have to take their medicine on this one and realise they’ll never claw back even a penny of the £17 million paid to Burnley for his signature.

Not only has Cornet failed to hit the mark at West Ham, but his injury-prone and fluctuating career also saw him struggle during a loan spell at Southampton the season before last. Even last season’s move to Italy resulted in just eight appearances.

Time To Cut Losses?

Personally, I thought there might still be a place for him in West Ham’s Championship squad given his versatility.

But if Ex’s report is correct, it would appear the club are now looking to terminate his contract.

Presumably, the mutual agreement would involve the Hammers paying up the final year of his deal, albeit at a discounted rate, allowing Cornet to move on and find a new club.

It would be another expensive lesson for the club, but perhaps one that allows everyone to draw a line under a transfer which simply never worked out.
