After Sullivan, this West Ham works very differently and protects its top talent – here’s the proof

The speed with with West Ham have moved to tie down Tomas Soucek to a new contract is very typical of this new regime at the football club.

Gone are the days of waiting until players are running down their deals and likely to be speaking to other clubs – Soucek played just a (woeful) 45 minutes back after injury against QPR which seemingly convinced the club to leap into action and trigger an extension to  his stay in east London meaning he’ll likely finish his career as a Hammer.

Sound judgement from the club who evidently judge that another stalwart committed to the club in their darkest hour is good for morale, good for Nuno and good for the squad – even if his best days are behind him.

And news today of a youngster already in line for a new West Ham contract shows a very different approach to protecting their up and coming talent.

Carlton Cole, it was, speaking on The Dressing Room podcast, who let the cat out of the bag apparently revealing that even though his new deal was only signed last year, Mohamadou Kante is in line for a new contract at West Ham to reflect his value to the club and the progress that he’s made in this, his breakthrough season:

Kante on signing his new deal last season : Another contract beckons as West Ham plan to tie him down following his breakthrough

“Swansea are actually flying at the moment. They’re playing some great stuff, but to go away from home to a team like that and win 1-0 was a massive, massive thing. Big up Divine Mukasa, you know, we’ve been singing his praises for quite a while, and Mo Kante as well.

Mo Kante, he’s a boy that we bought from Paris and he’s a very, very good prospect. And I think he’s about to sign a new contract with us”

Protecting assets it may be. Good governance it certainly is. Not something West Ham fans are used to but somewhere ‘up’ the chain of command from Nuno to the boardroom, ‘someone’ is taking the club in a more professional direction. And it is something of a breath of fresh air whistling through London Stadium.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Curse you Shaun Wright-Phillips.
I still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows another six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser.
Can tell I'm getting old knowing I watched both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old.
Magic.

Totally agree with you Martin. What refreshing news finally we look like a proper club moving forward in the right direction. Soucek is a great player to have at the club even if he doesn’t play every game. His love for West Ham is obvious, his experience and commitment can only be good for the youngsters to follow. Kante is getting better every game and deserves to be rewarded a better contract.
