West Ham v Spurs | “Will Tottenham turn up?”

Surprisingly, given West Ham’s season, the signs are not all bad for Sundays London derby between to of the fiercest rivals in the Premier League. Sitting just one place above the Hammers, Spurs’ Premier League points tally is not prioritised just now with the Europa League first and foremost in their manager and fans’ minds.

Which suits West Ham just fine. One person who gets this London derby is former Arsenal player turned pundit Paul Merson. Speaking to sportkeeda, Merson has made his own prediction, surprisingly, in favour of a Claret and blue triumph. Speaking ahead of their Europa League game on Thursday, the former Gooner made his own thoughts on the Spuds’ mindset quite clear:

“The question is, will Tottenham turn up? We know how inconsistent they can be, so it isnt a foregone conclusion that they’ll go through. West Ham have been terrible all season but I’m backing them to win because I don’t think Spurs will prioritise this game”.

His prediction certainly surprised me – a 2-0 win for the Hammers.

Quite where the two goals will come from is unclear but given the likelihood of wholesale changes to West Ham’s opponents’ line-up on Sunday as they prepare for the second leg, an unlikely home win would certainly create a few smiles in this dreadful West Ham season. Furthermore it might be just what the doctor ordered for a club suffering from a season-long malaise and supporter apathy. Nothing like a win over the arch-rivals, however meaningless the game may be to them!

Maybe a springboard towards an end of season upturn? Let us hope, for once, Paul Merson has it spot on. Three points would lift us above our north London rivals and do something towards lifting the gloom that seems to have settled over the former Olympic stadium. Let us hope our West Ham manager sets his team out to go for a win against what will certainly be a preoccupied opponent.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

“Will Spurs turn up” ? Even if they don’t, aren’t you hoping for a bit much ? We stand a better chance of winning if “West Ham don’t turn up “ !
