It was the day when the World Cup finally kicked into gear and for West Ham defender El Hadji Malick Diouf, he really couldn’t have had a sterner test as Senegal lost 3-1 to France.

Diouf himself didn’t do too badly against Kylian Mbappé in the first half and probably should have had an assist with one of his trademark crosses in the second period, which had the French defence all over the place.

An Enigma

For me, the left-back remains something of an enigma.

There are times when I think he looks clumsy and struggles defensively, lacking in pace.

But on other occasions, like yesterday when he dispossessed Mbappé before producing a slide-rule pass to start a Senegal attack, he looks like a quality player.

I’m still on the fence as to whether he’s good enough to play in the top flight for a Champions League team just yet.

A Chance To Enhance His Reputation

As with West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, this World Cup represents a huge opportunity for Diouf to enhance his reputation on the international stage.

What is clear is that if West Ham were able to retain him, he’d be one of the better players in the Championship.

However, as the club have stated, there is no hurry to sell players, and there seems an intention to wait until the dust has settled on the World Cup before entering into serious negotiations over any departures.

No Pressure To Leave

One thing is clear.

Diouf and his representatives are among a number of players who have been informed by the club that there is no pressure on them to leave.

And it would be fair to assume that Nuno Espírito Santo would very much like to keep Malick Diouf at West Ham next season.

Whether that proves possible is another matter entirely.

Enigma is probably the right word Gonzo. If he does stay and Summerville goes, could he be an option in a more advanced role next season? Does not have the pace or trickery of Summerville but such a great crosser of the ball. Scarles and even Mayers or KWP are potential options at left back.
