London Borough Newham Council have informed London Stadium Safety Advisory Group Board members that there will be an application for a revised Safety Certificate for a capacity crowd of 62,500 in football mode at the former Olympic Stadium.
The council told the Safety group in October that once it has been submitted it will be discussed further before it is granted.
Newham council reminded the group that the Safety Certificate only covers the stadium island and that partners will still need to ensure plans and contingencies are in place for egress and transport for a football crowd of 62,500. Discussions are still ongoing with the planning authority minutes from the October London Stadium Safety Advisory Group reported.
West Ham hopes to increase capacity to 62,000 next season and a contract amendment agreed earlier this year reveals the club will need to pay another £83,000 per year in rent to take capacity to 62,500 taking the total rent to around £3.4m per annum.
If they don’t act and replace Pellegrini, next season they could be applying to cut the capacity in half.
