Details are beginning to emerge about Julen Lopetegui’s potential contract with West Ham.

While he has yet to sign the contract, a draft agreement has been reached between the Hammers and the former Sevilla coach.

According to the Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Lopetegui is set to sign a two-year contract with an option for a third year. The extension would be triggered if West Ham qualify for European competition within the first two years of the Spaniard’s tenure.

Once the deal is signed, Lopetegui will earn €4 million per year at West Ham, which is more than the €3.2 million contract he initially agreed with AC Milan last month before the Serie A club withdrew from the deal.

If true, this complete package would be significantly less than what would have been offered to bring Ruben Amorim to the London Stadium and seems more aligned with the club’s modest ambitions.

Lopetegui, who has continued to reside in the UK following his departure from Wolverhampton Wanderers at the beginning of the current campaign, is expected to bring his entourage of trusted coaches and back-room staff with him to the London Stadium.

I for one, will support and welcome Lopetegui to West Ham and leave judgement on his capabilities until at least the end of next season to see what he can do for us.

    • Selsdonhammer says:

Totally agree. I cannot understand the negativity surrounding his appointment before he has walked through the door. Under Moyes in 2024 we have been dreadful so, for me, the new manager is very welcome and needs to be fully supported by all the fans. Moyes is history so let’s get behind Lopetegui and, hopefully, we will see better football played by a more vibrant, younger side. Dare we hope to see some Academy players having regular game time?

Hey Rob, stop talking like a reasonable, sensible adult….
      You’re making others look stoopid!

      • Rob says:

Ha ha..sorry Brian! I don’t know what came over me to come out with something like that. But, I stand by what I said.

    • P wright says:

Agree let’s see what he will achieve come end of season

  • Jamie says:

    I.say give him a chance

  • Colin says:

Well said Rob. I’m tired of reading negative comment after negative comment on anyone and anything relating to West Ham. Thank you David Moyes for the success you have brought us, but now it is time for a more dynamic approach. My brother in law has lived in Spain for many years and tells me Julen Lopetegui is an incredibly exciting prospect

Lopeteguiball is a bit of a mouthful and having read that he, like Moyes, is pragmatic and not one to bring young academy players into the team, I have not been keen on him. However, if Sullivan wants him then that’s that. So we should give him a fair crack of the whip and hopefully she’ll be right mate!

What a poor decision from the board , not the manager we need. Seems an appointment is based purely on finance rather than any ambition to improve. Short sighted as success on the pitch brings more money to the club . Such a poor decision. Let’s hope the board have a rethink before anything is signed!

    • Oliver Burns says:

We won’t know if it’s a poor decision until we see the results and, most importantly, the level of performance. I don’t see this as a financial decision. Fact is that we need the coach in place before the transfer window opens. Neither Amorim nor the other Portuguese (not Mourinho!) is available. My criticism of Sullivan is that he kept faith with Moyes for too long

  • Dave says:

Yes, agree with the other comments. He wouldn’t have been my first choice but let us at least give the bloke a fair go and who knows, if they back him properly in the transfer market with Tim pulling the strings we might just be surprised. And I hope Moysie gets a decent send off on Saturday, he brought stability to our club when we really needed it, and we did have some good times after all.

  • Phil says:

I totally agree with that, too much negativity round the club. Give him a chance and hopefully the club will go forward by being bought .

  • Bob says:

You’ll get your verdict when West Ham are relegated next season.

  • Andrew says:

    My main questions are:
    (i) can he work with Steidten? I.e. are they on the same wavelength when it comes to potential targets, as it seemed likes Steidten and Moyes were on different planets.
(ii) will he be better than Moyes at getting the most out of players bought (thinking of Haller, Scamacca….)
(iii) Can he (will he) give players from the U21s set up more chances.

  • AJHammer says:

I would rather lose playing exciting football than continue to watch the low possession and mostly dreadful stuff recently. Appreciate what Moyes has achieved and wish him all the best.

  • RugbyHammer says:

AJHammer sums up my opinion completely. Under Moyes we were letting teams like Sheffield United have 70% possession. I wish Moyes well but time for change.

  • Ironman Sim says:

I really don’t know who started this idea that Lopetegui is just a Spanish Moyes. The guy has managed Spain and Real Madrid and had done a great job with both the Spanish U21 and Wolves so he can hit the ground running and hopefully bring in the Academy players too as he has worked with young players. The fact that he can be defensive is not a problem if that stops soul destroying 5-0 thrashings.

Goodbye moyesball hello ticky tacky football(in Spanish)
