Christmas Day and memories of David Gold

It is Christmas Day and memories of David Gold remain in my mind during this special 24 hours WRITES HUGHIE SOUTHON.

My thoughts go to the Gold family on this day as they recall their wonderful father who passed away in 2023  followed shortly afterwards by his eldest daughter Jacqueline

Christmas Day and memories of David Gold

David was without question one of the finest men I have ever known who was sometimes disgustingly attacked on the social media platforms.

He had covid on two or three occasions during the last year of his life but never failed to ring me knowing I was and asthma and COPD sufferer who needed to be very careful.

Not once did he tell me – that came later – of his own problems with the virus and when I discovered the extent of his problems I asked why he hadn’t told me.

His response was that given my condition he hadn’t believed it an appropriate thing to tell me – that was David, others first, himself second.

A Hammer to his backbone, he poured millions into the club and even when he was at Birmingham City  had told me his dream was to own the Irons having been a young player and fan who would sneak in the Chicken Run at half time.

He was a very special man and a great statesman for the club and I know of nobody who met him who doesn’t speak very highly indeed of him.

It’s a sad Christmas Day to be remembering the great man but we were all truly blessed that he was a Hammer and gave so much of himself to us all as fans.
