FINAL POLL RESULT: West Ham’s standing issue

|

West Ham fans have voted by a massive majority for those who are standing during games at The London Stadium to sit down.

ClaretandHugh ran a 24 hour poll in which we asked the question:

The issue of standing fans in the London Stadium rumbles on. Should those who are on their feet sit down or not in order to get the capacity up to 66k?

The result was never in doubt. Those who are standing are not only defying the club’s requests but the majority of fans who want the stadium at full capacity.

The final majority is the biggest ever recorded in a ClaretandHugh poll with a total of 1674 fans casting their votes over the day.

And the numbers casting a vote ensured it went past the 1,000  required to make if official with pollsters Mori.

Here is the final result:

A total of 1,335  (79.75) said sit down

303 said they should stand (18.1 pc)

2.15 pc (36) recorded a don’t know vote

I understand some want to stand in line with our great british traditions but in our new stadium we are all going to have to come together for the greater good which means an extra 9000 in the stadium. Anybody that thinks their right to stand is greater than allowing another 9000 fans Attend games needs to take a long hard look at themselves…. Havent we always called ourselves a westham family? …….

The Bournemouth fans stood throughout the whole game. When I asked a steward why, he said there were only 10 stewards so what could they do. There is no way WH fans are going to sit while away fans are allowed to stand. Why would they? Not making away fans sit also provides ammo for those who claim a right to stand.

This poll means nothing Hugh ? 2.36% of 100% of people voted ? Its pointless . I will look down at the BML v Watford and they will be standing ! Right or wrong ? Its a stand off , Brady’s preferences and utter bias to the issue has a big part in what’s happening !her preferential comments won’t help !
Solution is the quicker safe standing is introduced the better ! That’s not going to happen if Brady has her way , gold is sending a different message ? That’s not helping the situation !
Hopefully this is you’re last poll on this Hugh , would rather let the club sort it and , let’s talk about football ! 2.3% is inconclusive .
Talks cheap , action is positive ! Depends on which way the club really want to go on this 🙂
I’m more interested in lanzini and payet starting v Watford 😉

It’s very simple, if you’re in the stadium sit down like you’re supposed to, there are people behind you you know.

  • LJ says:

I 100% blame the club on this issue. They haven’t allocated any “standing or singing areas” which they could of very easily done so. I know a lot of fans hate this idea, but at least this way the people who want to stand can and the people who want to site cant moan that someone is standing infront of them. I went to palace the other day (friends a season ticket holder had a spare ticket going) and I was sitting opoosite their fanatics. All game long that area of the stand stood up. The other side of the ground is a family stand and they sat down. And there was NO issue at all.

I stood at my seat at Upton Park every game I was there. Why the hell should I change just because we have moved to a posh ground?

    • Fish N Chips says:

You say “Why the hell should I change just because we have moved to a posh ground?” So you clearly don’t give a stuff about the people whose view you are blocking. How sympathetic to your cause do you think the ordinary person will feel towards you? Doesn’t do your cause any good.
I support standing, but not at the expense of others. I bet you don’t want to do something practical about it like signing a petition to get it changed? https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/164625 PLEASE prove me wrong!
Also, there is a superb seat swap site: http://www.coyi-seatexchange.co.uk/index.php A brilliant solution, but have you bothered to try and swap? Again, pls prove me wrong! I don’t like seeing WHU fans fighting each other.
Pls demonstrate you are not just selfish .

    • Boleyn Boy says:

Because the owners of the stadium say you should and all the time you persist in your selfish course of action you are effectively denying entry to 9k of your fellow fans. Try thinking about what’s best for the club instead of spitting out your dummy.

      • LJ says:

1: why do we need the extra seats?
2: not spitting out my dummy. I pay good money for my ticket.
3: Go to any other ground in the country (including wembley) and I have never been asked to sit down before. Why are we different?
        4. Why the mentality change. Been acceptable to stand a Boleyn for 100 plus years. Why change just because we have moved?

        • Fish N Chips says:

Given the opportunity not to have to block someone’s view, would you take it? Here is a ticket swapping scheme http://www.claretandhugh.info/ticket-exchange-and-transfer-schemes-launched/ Will you give it a go? RSVP

          • LJ says:

100% i would take it. My very first comment here was its the clubs fault they didn’t make any standing or singing areas.

        • WHU647580 says:

LJ – because it’s a new ground which is trying to get the maximum safety certificate / license it can. It was accepted at the Boleyn, because over time (years) fans who’d wanted to stand went to the right places, BML, STBL, Chav Corner and Chicken Run by the away fans. We are a long way from that now, we have a significant amount of fans that chose the BML/STBL and probably shouldn’t of done in hindsight, fans with kids who needed a family area and infirm/older fans as well. People moved for a number of reasons, cost, comparable view etc. Also there are less seats behind the goals in these area’s at the OS than there were at UP (believe it or not) and those “standers” have probably been displaced and are trying to stand in other areas, which also isn’t helping matters.

The club can’t make an official “standing” area because that’s breaking PL regulations as no club has an “official standing area” even though it’s widely accepted nearly every ground has standers.

Basically the club have ballsed it up a bit, they should’ve had a family area and they should’ve made it much clearer at the Reservation Center which areas were known to be standing area’s at UP as a hint to anyone who thought they’d be sitting down with no issues.

  • baddowhammer says:

LJ I am a claret member,I want one of those seats, and so does my son,you may pay good money, but West Ham could earn more to buy better. We are different at the moment because we have just moved, eyes are on us,wait till we’re at full capacity, and the rest will follow. We’ve never been “allowed” to stand since stadiums became all seaters. So with that in mind sit down if you love West Ham.by the way well said Boleyn Boy.COYI

    • Fish N Chips says:

Hey Baddow; apparently, many people who invited friends under the Founder scheme will not be renewing their tickets next year. Hopefully you will get tickets…
Also, there is every chance that many of the standers will eventually find their STs rescinded according to an ex-security guy I sit next to. Not what I want to see this happen at all; v far from it; their songs are the atmosphere life blood.
It is a massive shame the club didn’t work this out at the reservation centre. Now it is a God Almighty mess. Have you signed the standing petition? It would help to find resolution for ALL parties…

      • baddowhammer says:

As an academy member last year, sometimes I would feel like standing and get tickets for the BMl,I’m not anti singing, many a game ended in sore throat. So I will sign said petition, but at the right time, thanks for giving me the heads up for next year,I will certainly try to get my ST.COYI

    • LJ says:

That’s the problem, the club are trying to bend what i would say is tradition to suit people looking in on us externally, nothing to do with the paying fans. If they had thought the seat allocation process through better they would not have had this problem and would have had all fans (sitting and standing) happy.

      • LJ says:

And one more thing, you say wait untill we are at full capacity. So thats 2 years down the line of sitting, which kills the atmosphere, which will become a standard and we will basically be a small arsenal.

        • baddowhammer says:

The 60,000 would have been granted by the Bournemouth game, then 66,000 the following season 16-17 if all had gone well, where do you get this two year thing from LJ.COYI

  • Hammertime Mikey says:

Hugh your poll question was incorrectly worded.
“Should those who are on their feet sit down or not”

If someone answered “yes” what did they mean?
Yes they should sit down or yes they should not sit down?
You need to run the poll again removing the words “or not”
or change the answers to “sit down” “stand up”

As for the subject itself, All seater stadiums should never have been introduced, they are not and never will be suited to watching a football match, the sooner we see a return to proper standing areas at football grounds the better.
In the meantime some fans, in certain parts of the ground where they are blocking the view of people behind them, I hope will respect them and sit down.
BM lower I support their right to stand, and if that means I don’t get a ticket having paid my £40 for the Claret membership so be it.
It will all calm down in time, the capacity will be increased what ever happens.

  • JB says:

Good to see your still running your site well FnC!

  • GW says:

Everyone that bought a claret membership was mugged off by the club themselves not simply by those that stand. They sold you a product based against a capacity that the council never signed off for £40 a head all the while letting season ticket holders having an option of +2. The persistent standers maybe a pain in the ass but the club sold you members a product on a potential capacity not a true one so are as much or if not more to blame than those that stand 🙂

    • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

Agree the club handled the move of the existing ST holders, the +2 scheme etc, the claret membership is a nice moneymaker for the club as is the season ticket waiting list. still doesn’t change the fact that those without ST’s would be better off if the capacity is increased, still doesn’t change the fact that some standers are being inconsiderate to other fans including children and older fans aswell as those that just want to sit and watch the game. It’s time the club stepped in and dealt with it, which DG seems to have made a move in the right direction, safe standing would be the ideal solution preferrably behind both goals at the same time increasing the away support allocation because they add atmosphere also, in theory if both ends behind the goals were made all seater we could have a 75,600 capacity, which would put us only 35 seats behind Man U whose capacity is 75635… food for thought ? To me it would seem a worthwhile investment for the club to work with the LLDC to joint fund that development and make our club by far the 2nd biggest in Britain. I am sure if they really wanted to the could find a way to increase the capacity to the 80000 it was at the Olympics, it would also make it much more attactive to investment in the future. The David’s aren’t geting any younger so you have to think in 10 – 15 years anything could happen.

    • WHU647580 says:

Agree with a lot of that. The only thing that they did know was that 54K was signed off (then 57K) and they were going up to 52K ST holders, factor in the 3,000 for aways and there is little left for members. They didn’t need “+2” and “+1” was more likely the right scheme. They also kept on taking 10 quid waiting list fees off of punters when they knew they’d sold out the 52K, they’ve build a nice bit of supply and demand here, which will keep replacements coming for years.

I don’t agree with the standers ignoring people behind and both sets being confrontational but it’s clear to see both sides of the argument. The club helped cause this, they need to fix it, simple ticket swap system and it would be done in a season. If they let it carry on naturally it could take much longer.

      • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

Thanks 647580 I definitely am not labelling all standers as inconsiderate, which is why I said some, its the inconsiderate aggressive ones I am mostly referring too, I get the arguement believe me but as someone on the other side of the fence that is a claret member I want to see the situation resolved without all the aggro and in the best interests of all fans and the club, i.e. in more of us being able to attend and with all parties being happy, in a perfect world safe standing for those that want too and those that need to sit being able to enjoy the atmosphere they create but without being inconvenienced and having their experience affected 🙂 COYI

  • GW says:

The club did cause this that’s the issue numbers, they happily took money off fans for membership knowing they would be unlikely to get a ticket then have thrown the blame on those that stand because they didn’t have the capacity in the first place to make there promises. I’m a ST holder didn’t take the +2 but am sat next to a ST holder who did and the two with him are a spuds and arse fan who come because it’s cheaper than getting ST’s at the club they support its a ****ing joke.

  • Stan The Man says:

F#ck,has Daphnes council moved over here for the day lmao.

    • GW says:

Only thing I’ll be serious about Stan fed up hearing that it’s the ones than stand up that are stopping capacity increase when it’s the board that have ****ed it up royally 🙂
