The managerial merry go round shows no signs of slowing with David Moyes the latest Head Coach facing mounting pressure, with Everton sitting in 14th position with three wins, three draws and four defeats. The Merseyside club are only five points clear of West Ham.
After returning to Everton in January 2025, Moyes was hailed as a stabilising force for a club that had flirted with relegation for several seasons. His previous tenure from 2002 to 2013 had earned him legendary status among fans, and his experience was seen as vital to steer the club back to safety. Initially, Moyes delivered, Everton comfortably avoided relegation last season and even harboured hopes of European qualification.
Monday night’s draw against newly promoted Sunderland, while not disastrous, exposed tactical flaws and questionable decisions that have left fans and pundits concerned.
Reports suggest Brendan Rogers is being discussed by the Everton board as a potential replacement. The “careful what you wish for” brigade may be now focussing their attention on Everton should the club part ways with Moyes, yet for now he remains in charge, but the shadow of change is creeping closer.
The game changes and those who change with it such as Brighton and Bournemouth are those having success. David Moyes hasn’t moved and consequently Everton are where they are,we are the same,we haven’t kept up with the pace. I think that the board lack true ambition and give lip service where progress is concerned, too much penny pinching,to them it’s a money making exercise.
Like most people at WHU I like DM and appreciate what he did, plus there was that moment of glory in Europe. I felt alright his staying but only IF he kept evolving and adapting, which he did not. So I did want WHU to progress with an even better manager.
Recruitment, automatically parking the bus against top teams, wearing out stalwarts such as Soucek, bad subbing, academy, the list is longer, but he does lots of good things too.
He loves the game and obviously knows tons, I just wish he’d keep on ironing out his faults and improving his all round approach just as he said himself, with football changing. It would have been the easy part, given the platform of knowledge he has. Wish him luck.
Ultimately he was let down by Sullivan. Moyes should have been given full control but Sullivan wanted to wrestle back control of transfers etc by appointing Steidten. It was never going to work. Moyes is an old school manager who wants full control. Ultimately that’s why he’ll fail at Everton also because the owners there also want to dictate to the manager.
Everton had a poor October conceding on average 2 goals per game (sounds familiar) and have earned just 1 point more than us in the last 6 games and yet we are a club that is in a fully recognised crisis, a crisis fully recognised by the media. David Moyes should really be scrutinised much more closely by his punditry pals on the radio and TV and the mythical status of a manager that brings hard nosed resilience to all is dispelled as a distant memory. Aside from the 20/21 campaign, Moyes’ 2nd spell was not really anything we hadn’t witnessed in our previous recent years, top 10 finishes followed by long spells of relegation threatened seasons and form. This demise was ultimately marked by the Uefa conference cup win. Whilst we all enjoyed this trophy, it was ultimately a competition that held a stature to that of the Intertoto cup. Facing clubs likes Silkeborg, Viborg, Larnaca, FCSB, Gent & Anderlecht en route to the semi final v AZ Alkmaar that were narrowly squeaked past playing a sort of anti football, not even a counter attacking tactic. I sound ungrateful, but really should we be careful what we wished for ?
Playing three games a week having long cup runs and playing in Europe and expecting Moyes to maintain a European place finish in the league the year we won the European cup? Moyes was a great manager for us and deserves all due respect.
Last few seasons they’ve finished 13th, 15th, 17th, 16th. So 14th ain’t too bad for them is it, I mean what do they expect with the players they’ve got? Surely they’d give Moyes a transfer window or two to see what he could do. Moyesie used to be totally in control of that club years ago though and now he’s bound by whatever the new owners want and I doubt they have the patience of the old owners to build something over time. Everyone wants instant success nowadays. Including the fans.
