Freddie Potts, son of former Hammer Steve Potts scored his first goal for West Ham tonight helping the U23’s to a 3-1 win over Leicester City.
Freddie has been at West Ham United since he was five years old. The first-year scholar is a very impressive central midfielder – calm, composed, ticks things over nicely and takes the ball forward when needed. Young Potts is said to have a great mentality and is beginning to add goals to his game.
Father Steve scored a West Ham goal against Hull City at the Boleyn Ground in October 1990. In 506 first-team appearances for West Ham United, the reliable defender scored just once, in that 7-1 Division Two thrashing over Hull.
Potts Senior started his career at West Ham as an apprentice in 1983, making his first appearance against Queens Park Rangers on 1 January 1985. Known as Pottsy, he played for West Ham United for the next seventeen years. Primarily a fullback, Potts developed into a ‘utility’ player, he spent large portions of his career playing at centre-half despite being undersized for such a position. He also on occasion featured in midfield.
Potts was West Ham United Club captain for 3 years between 1993 and 1996, and was voted Hammer of The Year in 1993 and 1995, and runner up in both 1992 and 1994. In 1997 he was awarded a testimonial by West Ham. He is now the U23 assistant coach at the West Ham Academy.
