Hammers admit they would love to sign this striker

CandH exclusive by Hughie Southon

West Ham are set to go hell for leather in their attempts to get Benfica striker Darwin Nunez this summer.

We all but clinched the deal back in the winter but the Potuguese club failed to confirm the agreement very late on deadline day.

Now the Hammers have confirmed to Claretandhugh exclusively that he is a top priority signing for them in the next window with a key source telling us: “We’d love him, its whether we can get him!  We have many targets, but he is very much on the list.”

Nunez scored in the Portuguese club’s 1-3 defeat by Liverpool last night and so far this season has scored an astonishing 26 goals in 31 appearances including two which helped Benfica knock Barcelona out of the Champions League.

The 22 year old is also being tracked by Inter Milan and his price is likely to be somewhere approaching £60 million given he is not out of contract until the summer of 2025.

  1. We haven’t a very good track record with transfers from Portuguese clubs. I can’t recall any successful bids for players from that part of the world, and it’s not for want of trying.
