The Europa League is a knockout competition organised by UEFA back in 1971.
Clubs’ performance in their local leagues across Europe determines their participation. Winners and runners-ups usually take part in the higher pedigree competition which is the Champions League. This is the second tier of the same tournament, previously known as the UEFA Cup.
UEFA currently has a prize pool of €500.8 million (£432m) will be distributed among clubs participating in the 2021-22 Europa League (that include clubs in the qualifying round).
The winners of the UEFA Europa League can earn up to €15 – €25 million depending on their performances. Plus they can earn another €10 to €40 million on market pool payment depending on the country the club comes from.
For example, if West Ham were to win the Europa League next season they can earn around €20 million (£17m) from fixed amount portion and another €40 million (£34.5m) in market pool taking their potential earnings from Europa League somewhere between €60 million (£52m) if they were to win the competition plus a place in the Champions League the following season.
West Ham currently sit in sixth place which would earn them a place in next season’s Europa League.
Got to get in it first.
Wonder what odds we’ll be quoted if we do? 1000/1?
Surely worth a punt.
