The Hammers under 23s came out on top in a crucial relegation clash against Swansea City last night.
They scored a 3-0 win over bottom of the table Swansea to give themselves a chance of escaping the drop over the last four games of the season.
They meet Arsenal, Leicester City, Derby County and Everton as they look to pull themselves above Spurs in a season which has seen their ranks depleted by injuries and first team squad calls.
The have been missing the likes of Grady Diangana, Xavi Silva and Nathan Holland as they have struggled to put a consistent run together.
But with most of the injured back they will now look to their run in with much more optimism.
Last night’s win leaves the Hammers still in the bottom two but, with a game the side will be confident of rallying to end the season strongly after last night’s game.
They were helped to their victory by a goal from exciting Portuguese newcomer Mesaqque Dju who scored after two goals each side of it from Dan Kemp.
The attacker, who was introduced as a second half substitute, found the back of the net with his first touch at the Liberty Stadium and could barely wipe the smile from his face after the game.
He told www.whufc.com: “I am very happy to get my first goal for this big club. Now I have to keep going because we need the points in the league. We have worked hard every day and it was a good win for us tonight.
“It was my first touch I think but I didn’t think – my focus was on the team and doing my best out there and I was very happy to be in the position to score the goal. It was a good touch for me to score and it’s a good night for me.
“When Nathan [Holland] received the ball, I saw him and my first thought was to get inside the box because I know Nathan has the quality and the speed to get across and put the ball in the centre. Luckily, I was in the right place and I am very happy when I touched the ball to score.”
I’m pleased for the young lad Dan Kemp after being out so long with a serious knee injury it looks like he’s getting his form back and playing really well. Two goals for him in this game, one in the last. Same thing with Holland.
Blimey-so the U23s are ‘depleted by injuries’ too. What is it with this club? What is the absentee rate like for the cleaners & admin staff? Do the cooks have to fill in when there aren’t enough ground staff to spike the pitch? Is there a danger the next home match will be postponed because half the guys who work the turnstiles have got sprained wrists?
