Hammers linked with United free agent

|

Manchester United are prepared to let Phil Jones leave on a free transfer this summer.

Graeme Bailey writing for 90min has suggested West Ham are one of seven clubs who could take him.

Newcastle United, Everton, and Southampton are all keeping tabs on Jones’ situation – as are Brighton, Crystal Palace and Burnley in addition to West Ham.

Jones has not played a Premier League game for United since January 2020, and is effectively surplus to requirements. However, he still has two years left on a contract that is worth well in excess of £100,000-a-week – which has proven a real sticking point when the Red Devils have attempted to move him out on loan over the past 12 months.

The 27-cap England international still has a lot to offer at the top level but may need to lower his wage expectations if he wants to get game time.

Manchester United could give him a compensation pay out to make up for any wage shortfall. West Ham did a similar deal for Reece Oxford to leave their wage bill.

    • Childish says:

Yup ,, after last season you woukd of thought they would put up…but its all smoke and mirrors again….pathetic

  • DJHammer says:

Injuries curtailed his career, vastly experienced though.
Has he ever played for a southern based club?
Seems an unlikely scenario. But free, same wage as Dawson, possibly worth considering if nobody else is available, but his injury record is a real cause for concern.

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

Injury prone and free, sounds like a certainty so long as we offer huge wages to keep us in the media discussing about how much he has cost per minute of playing time. Rumour rating – certainty

  • Alan says:

We all know what happens when West Ham sign injury prone players. Not a single one has turned out to be a success.

  • Selsdonhammer says:

Jones, Braithwaite & Oxlade-Chamberlain don’t fit the profile of “young and hungry” and do nothing to lower the average age of the squad. All are injury-prone too and none take us to the “next level”. Hope these are all media talk “targets” due to them being bargain basement cases. When are we going to see a quality purchase of a first team player? The window may have a few weeks to run but the start of the season is much nearer.

  • Richard says:

100 000 GBP / week? Gotta be joking!

  • Optimist says:

I hope none of you lot work for the Samaritans!

  • Newtown says:

    Nooooooooooooo.

  • Taffyhammer says:

Don’t panic. He’s not coming to West Ham. We don’t need passengers at any cost. Not unless he has a ‘Luke Shaw’ look at himself and redesigns his attitude and approach. Can’t see that happening anytime soon.
    COYI

  • WestHamJohn says:

Here we go again, I am sure he will come to west ham if we want 100,000 a week to sit on the bench most of the season, ah yes Carroll , Wilshere, Yarmo the list goes on
