“How Much?” West Ham v Millwall Shirt Sells For Absolutely Insane £100,000

Somebody has apparently just paid almost £100,000 for Konstantinos Mavropanos’ match-worn West Ham shirt from the 2-2 draw against Millwall.

Yes, you read that correctly.

West Ham auctioned the shirts worn at The Den, including the one in which Mavropanos headed the dramatic equaliser in front of the travelling Hammers support after Nuno Espírito Santo’s team had been 2-0 down.

According to the completed auction listing, eight bids were placed for Mavropanos’ shirt before it ended at an utterly bonkers £99,999.99.

£100,000 for a Mavropanos shirt?

I can’t help thinking there might be something mischievous going on here.

In fact, the mischievous side of me can’t help wondering whether a Millwall fan has bid for it and simply won’t pay up.

Because I cannot imagine anyone actually paying £100,000 for a football shirt. If you’d told me that much had been paid for Geoff Hurst’s World Cup hat-trick shirt from 1966, I’d be more inclined to believe it.

This is, however, the shirt Mavropanos wore during an incredible afternoon at The Den.

As we reported immediately after the game, West Ham had been absolutely battered during the first half and found themselves 2-0 behind before Mohamadou Kanté gave the Hammers hope.

Mavropanos then rose to meet Manor Solomon’s delivery and headed home the equaliser, producing huge celebrations among the travelling West Ham support.

His passionate reaction was one of the enduring images of a remarkable comeback, although the goal did paper over what had otherwise been a difficult afternoon for the Greek defender.

West Ham shouldn’t count their chickens yet

As far as the club are concerned, I certainly wouldn’t be counting my chickens until that £99,999.99 has actually been deposited into the West Ham coffers.

Let’s hope it is true.

Because at the reduced rate following relegation, the sale of that shirt will probably pay for two weeks of Mavropanos’ wages.

Not bad for a shirt that presumably still smells of The Den.
