Legal challenge backfires on West Ham

|

West Ham’s legal challenge against Sky Sports over claims made on the Sunday Supplement seems to have backfired as the press world line up to take daily potshots at them.

Geoff Shreeves read our an apology from an auto-cue on Sunday but that legal settlement seems to have united the press against the West Ham board. West Ham are thought to have written additional journalists asking for an apology, it is believed some of these journalists have also been banned from the London Stadium.

Matty Law who appeared on the Sunday Supplement is one journalist who appears to be now writing daily articles criticising the Hammers.  His Daily Telegraph article yesterday publicised a West Ham supporter protest of black balloons and banners at Anfield away. Richard Keys has entered the argument by penning a poisonous blog yesterday entitled West Ham – A Car Crash

The Sun newspaper also took a pop at David Gold for liking a tweet that referred to some fans as morons.

Today is no different with two more attacks in the press against the West Ham board.

The Daily Mail has taken exception to claims in the Sky apology over Birmingham City claims while the Sun newspaper hits backs saying relegation form is down to wasted millions and not the stadium, fans or the press.

When threatened the press close ranks and we are unlikely to see the daily feeding frenzy end anytime soon.

Terrible reporting as I have no idea what the original story is/was and the article is as clear as mud as to what your point is. there are no references to what the apology was, what the original legal challenge was so the overall blog is totally confusing.

As long as the club has a poisonous and divisive Brady running things it will never change. Time for her to go and a new approach. She fails at every level

The decision to pressure Sky, part of one of the most powerful media organisations on the planet, appears to be yet another error of judgement on the part of GSB. Can anyone argue that, in all of the ensuing negative coverage of GSB contained in the links here, the saddest line for us fans has been written by Richard Keys of all people, in his clarifying of the misconception of his views on the Club: “A wonderful football club with glorious traditions trashed in the modern era”. Is this the most fitting indictment of GSB’s 10 long years in control of WHUFC.

Good…getting nothing but what they deserve

I think that often the board are their own worst enemies – Karren Brady writing in the Sun is a good example – and what was David Gold thinking by liking that tweet? If you agree with it then do so in private – if we lose to Man City then the following 15 days are going to seem very long and Moyes might wish that he had gone away for warm weather training (or that he had never come back)

  • Hammerkip says:

I got to agree it’s there own fault…they have made to many stupid mistakes and with gold on Twitter and Brady with her column it’s just so unprofessional…opened a can of worms they should keep shtum

  • Gavin&Stacey says:

Their demand for that apology against Sky will cost SuGo where it hurts the most, their bottom line, leaving even less in the club’s coffers. Sky will only now show the least amount of our games possible.
Imho they have just ordered a JCB for the hole they have dug for themselves. One PR disaster after another.

  • Neil says:

Exactly. What happened to the radio silence? Notice everyone loves the Queen because she keeps shtum, apart from once each year at Christmas. But prince Andrew, and prince Harry. Should have kept their mouths shut shouldn’t they. Best thing sully gold and Brady could do would be to keep quiet. It’s stuff they said in the past that has come back to bite them before after all. You’d think they’d learn.

Think Dave Kidds column was unnecessarily snide. How is the “tinpot” crossed arms Hammers gesture relevant to the story? And why the “tinpot” reference? I know he thinks he is honourably defending his mates but cheapens his argument with his references to how Gold and Sullivan made their money. Once again, how is this relevant to the story. Fact is, neither were. It was just Kidd getting in some snide digs because his mates’ comments were objected to. How a Fulham supporter can infer that anything to do with any other club is ” tinpot” is a joke in itself.
See what I did there? stuck in a gratuitous, snide comment. Not nice is it?

No surprise that the press have closed ranks. But if people don’t tell he truth at some stage you have to stick up fro yourself (Nobody likes to be to be told that they have their hand in the till ) Best bet is for us to stop being misled by the papers and get our news from Claret and Hugh !!

  • Big Al says:

The media have every right to delve into the owners’ performance at OUR club, just as they have in regard to the Royal family, politicians et al
    It’s called DEMOCRACY, Mr Sullivan.
I think it wAs spineless of Sky to cave in so readily to the litigation threats of squirming Sullivan and gutless Gold. And you can be sure West Ham will become even more of a target for investigative journalists now.
The only thing I would like to say to the Press is: an increasing number of us supporters loathe Gold, Sullivan and Brady, so please don’t vilify OUR club when the bad people are those three just passing through.

  • Dusty Miller says:

Well isn’t sky owned by the same media people that own half the press? If so sounds like more of a “shot in your own foot” for the persons that gave a warning to sky???😁😁😁

  • Tom Smith says:

Drawing attention themselves when the club is a perilous position is absolutely poor decision making. All this negativity feeds into the team and supporters.
Moyes is in a hopeless situation and he will be the one to shoulder the blame if we’re relegated. Do the owners care about their investment or are they in the throes of a a death wish. We’ve got two chances of survival – slim and none. For God’s sake sell up for everyone’s sanity.

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

Although I am not a great fan of them, fair play to GSB for attacking bullies, the press have been at us pretty much since Tevez these new stories aren’t much more than business as usual imho. As it’s sky they will probably try to financially penalise us by showing less games even though they were in the wrong… or misunderstood depending on your view of it.

  • Phil Smyth says:

Gold and suli will not sell untill 2022 as the clause will no longer be in effect. If I’m incorrect in this please someone correct me. Richard keys has never liked us we all know that, but would not be surprised if we see more of our games on other media platforms. As in the original article West Ham is the 18th richest club in the world if you can fandom that. My friend recently met Antonio when Antonio was out injured, while conversing with Antonio he said where ever I am there is West Ham Fans. Us fans will always be bigger than the club, we are the heart and soul. Fans believe we would be better off going down and the owners sell up but we all Know that will never happen before an asset strip. We just have to remember the dealings of Terence Brown honorary life president. I think we have muddy waters ahead and not talking about the bow canal.
