I’ll make my own position clear in this, first up. I love it.
After so many years of moans and groans about the atmosphere at London Stadium – and how we’ve rocked the European quarter-finals and semi finals but been meek and mild during some PL matches – it is great to see one of the supporters’ groups doing something about it.
We all want ‘our’ stadium to become a place where other teams fear to come -and their fans talk about after the game. Part of that has to be continuing the ‘personalisation’ of the ground towards something uniquely West Ham rather than as it was when we moved in – an athletics stadium with goal posts.
Many things have helped, the carpet, the honours board with new trophy dates sitting proud – even the Hammers flags displayed around the pitch before kick off have made it more like ‘home’ As has time, and shedloads of new memories.
But one of the ”officially sanctioned’ fan groups, The Ironworks Alliance’, are taking it one step further and crowdfunding one of those massive TIFO crowd displays at the Bobby Moore Lower Stand, targeting the game against Manchester United for its unveiling. The design is classic Crossed Hammers with the date the club was founded – 1895- in claret and blue with the wording underneath ‘‘The hotter the furnace, the stronger the Iron”.
The group have set a £3000 fundraising target to pay for the display and have launched a crowd funding page. As of todays date they’re about half way to their target. Their tweet showing an extract of the display is below:
And the link, if you’d like to donate is here – I’m off to give ‘them’ a tenner – anything which makes London Stadium feel more like a Hammers’ home the better: Especially to be commended instead of just moaning, taking action to do something about it can only be a good thing.
There’s more atmosphere on the moon than the London Stadium on match days, its awful – a silly banner isn’t going to make much of a difference.
Sadly, you aren’t wrong more often than not.
There has been games, very few and far between I know, where the atmosphere has been great and those games have usually been under the lights and European games.
Our old ground lost it’s sparkle a long time before it was ripped down and games and atmosphere like the last game were more often than not, tepid at best.
For me, it never really was the same after the North Bank was changed to old seater.
But, if Arsenal fans can make the Emirates sound less like Highbury, surely we have to give it a go, despite the fact that our core fan base is very different to how it once was.
Still think the whole place needs knocking down though and rebuilt.
And your name is Watford. Dear god
I haven’t been to the London Stadium so I can’t comment, but when the team are playing good football and winning more games than losing, then there should be a good atmosphere created by the fans.
In comparison, I was at the Olympia Stadion in Munich and that is the worst stadium I’ve been to but the Bayern fans were able to create a good atmosphere.
COYI’s… and generate some noise!!
What I would like to add is… maybe the club should create a proper home end. For the ultras , for want of a better word. Think the “yellow wall” at Dortmund.
Get rid of that awful dj.Dancing around doing the crossed hammers I bet he’s not even a Hammers fan?
This clubs atmosphere will only improve. When the dwarf sorcerer and his goon loving apprentice. **** off .
