West Ham have already sold 20,000 tickets for the Betway cup with Athletic Bilbao at the London Stadium on 3rd August with over six weeks remaining.
The ticket office believes the friendly could sell out all 60,000 tickets in the first home friendly since Juventus played at the former Olympic Stadium.
A senior club source speaking to Claret and Hugh via Email this evening said: “We have sold over 20,000 sold for Athletico with 6 weeks to go, that is an amazing start for a preseason friendly. There is a long way to go, but a real chance of 60,000, It would be an incredible statement to the football world If we achieved it. We need to sell 33,000 just to break even as it is not a competitive game, under our London Stadium contract. We have to pay all the opening and running costs of the stadium plus pay £130,000 to away team”
The running costs of the London Stadium are said to be between £150,000 and £250,000 depending on how many stewards are employed, the risk category and the capacity of the crowd.
