Media’s campaign against West Ham fans

The mainstream media appear to be involved in a campaign against West Ham fans, which has seen many presenters reframe supporters’ concerns about the club’s form over the past 18 months.

In some instances, certain TV and radio celebrity pundits have resorted to lying by indicating that Hammers fans are demanding Champions League football. The diversionary tactic of misrepresenting many Irons supporters’ complaints appears to be a means of avoiding debating many people’s genuine concerns and questions.

Put simply, West Ham have been in relegation form in 2024, winning only three out of 17 games this year. David Moyes‘ side has conceded a record-breaking 70 goals and spent much of last season flirting with relegation. The defence has had over £80 million spent on central defenders alone, yet still fails to stop an avalanche of goals which could reach unprecedented levels by the time Luton and Manchester City have finished with us.

Former coach Mark Warburton departed at the beginning of the season, citing a clash of philosophy between himself and Moyes. The former Rangers coach remarked how he had to leave to preserve his deteriorating friendship with Moyes. At the same time, the club saw set-piece coach Paul Nevin depart, with Moyes deciding against appointing a replacement.

Factor in the manager’s mistrust of half of his squad, and inability to adjust to the new 5 substitutes rule, and a disastrous last throw of the transfer dice with Kalvin Phillips, and it’s fair to say that fans had reasons to be concerned.

Therefore, it’s completely unacceptable to have our worries dismissed by pundits who seemingly know nothing of supporters’ frustrations. The last 24 hours have seen a tsunami of condescending comments from many who should know better as they line up to stick the boot into Hammers fans.

We’ve been labelled as an entitled, unrealistic, and ungrateful fanbase, and told to prune our ambitions whilst the likes of Chris Sutton and Paul Merson patronise us and repackage our concerns to suit their own narrative.

Of course, David Moyes’ dismissal could have been handled better, but to dismiss and ignore the fans’ real arguments while replacing them with invented complaints is bang out of order.

West ham fans are awful, one of the reasons I don’t want to go anymore.

You are a Spuds supporter who has a chicken on a beachball

      • Alfredo Garnetto says:

I beg to differ, old boy . It’s a vulture (& a pretty scrawny one at that) – def not a chicken . Chickens provide nourishment . Vultures do nothing but peck at the carcass of anything that comes within range . Not unlike my ex- wife , god bless ‘er …

    • Stevie Dee. says:

Absolutely agree, moyes best mananger of all time stats prove that.giving time and money and and support from the supporters moyes would have been challenging for top four. Supporters a bunch of winging no good fans.back to fighting relegation next season. C how they like that .get behind your manager and team and support the club for better or worse .Mile end hammer.

      • Wayne says:

We were fighting relegation last season until mid April, been in relegation form since end of December 23 but let’s not confuse facts with a bit of fantasy.

      • The Fat One from C&B says:

You’re either a complete wind-up-merchant,Spud,or a total moron. Perhaps all three.

      • Bob says:

        No way.
Relegation form since beginning of the year. Moyes is an unbending unrealistic manager. Can not or will not adapt

    • Wayne says:

Stopped going in December because of Moyes and his woeful, negative football.

Clearly, I was proved very right in that decision.

Good riddance to him. Just because we won a trophy in Europe has masked a multitude of problems.

    • Fred says:

Why are there so many non westham fans on here sad *******s get a life

    • De says:

You’ve never been to football match kr1stov me ol’ muppet let alone a West Ham game. Wise up boyo, you can even write a 2 sentenced lie without getting outed, lol.

    • Trevor says:

What are you talking about a load of rubbish

  • West Ham Fan no 32 says:

When has it ever been otherwise, if we lose 4 0 to Forest in an FA Cup semi final after a terrible decision to send Tony Gale off, or one of the big teams beats us narrowly suddenly we are great supporters which is all a way of keeping us down, the media and referees have had it in for us for decades, imho because we don’t stand for any of their b/s and fight back, we might not have much in the way of fortunes but we have bucketloads in terms of attitude, we expect our players and managers to reflect us, when they don’t we call it out which is fair enough isn’t it ?

Screw the media and their drivel, COYI !!!

    • Keith Holland says:

Correct – always been the same. According to his mates, us fans were out of order not liking Big Sam’s way of playing. Same situation now. David has done his job. Well done, and thanks, move on.
The media is full of hypocrites just after a “story”.

  • Ken Paveley says:

Majority of pundits probably never even seen a full West Ham game – if they had, they would understand what dross we’ve been for a couple of seasons ! So, taking this into account they are not entitled an opinion as they are totally ignorant !
To all you Muppets, sorry Pundits, just keep your traps shut !!

  • Martin says:

    “Entitled” are we, to what?
To expecting a decent afternoon’s entertainment in return for the £50 ticket price? Then yes, I think we are entitled having paid our money?!Having said to call West Ham fans “entitled” , in the sense Chris sutton is meaning….really?! We know we’te not ever going to win the league, we know its very, very unlikely we will ever play in the Champs Lge, but surely we’re allowed to hope, to dream, to wish for these things? What’s the point otherwise? That is not being Entitled, its just being optimistic thats all.
Suttondoesn’t know what he is talking about.

  • Mick says:

Apparently Moyes will be leaving us in good shape. An ageing squad that needs replacing. A youth team that wants to leave the club because they get no opportunities in the first team. A core of players who feel demoralised because they’ve had the creativity and fight knocked out of them. He’s leaving behind a director of football who couldn’t function properly in the transfer market because he was being made to postpone the project he was brought in for because of the veto of a manager that didn’t want to accept any unproven PL players that might have potential and a future sell on value. He may have stabilised us when he first came in but now he was well on his way to destabilising the club.

  • Deathblow says:

This is the most sensible thing I’ve read on here for a long time.
If only you’d been able to say his on radio and TV and stick up for us all.

    • Paul Taylor says:

Totally agree, excellent summary of where we are, how we arrived there and response from various, I’ll informed pundit’s since the new year on what we should wish for. The odd victory or clean sheet and conceding less than 4, 5 or six every other week would be a welcome change. Priority a dominant young CB and a quick, mobile CF they must be affordable and out there somewhere.

  • Kevin waylen says:

We proper west ham season ticket holders know the score! We should just laugh at these lazy pundits, who shouldn’t comment on our club until they’ve got their facts correct.Im sick of O’Hara on talksport and Merson and Sutton, shearer and others. We are entitled to see our team try to win football matches. And watch them play with more than 30 % possession. And expect them to not let in over 70 goals in a season.Im glad moyes has decided to leave now we can regroup and rebuild.COYI

  • John Smith says:

Ask any of these pundits who are having a love in with Moyes to take him at their club and the answer would of course be no thanks

  • Robert says:

Totally agree with the original post. These pundits commenting how bad Moyes has been treated and what’s good for Moyes. No reports what’s good for the club and their supporters going forward. In truth Moyes should have been sacked on several occasions in the past and the club and us were very generous with our support. What premiership club would tolerate just 3 wins this year? There’s no guarantee appointing a new manager brings success. Look at Chelsea the amount of money spent and the managers they have gone through recently. Most West Ham supporters are resigned to the fact it can’t get any worse with any appointment. We have an old school manager devoid of any ideas and tactical nuances with half a squad with the same style. The other half of our squad are good dynamic players but we don’t have a team. But remember be careful what you wish for, what a load of s***t.

  • Chris David says:

I suspect Chris Sutton’s farts are more interesting to listen to than anything that comes out his mouth.

    • Jim says:

I agree Moyes has had his time at the club but the players need to share a large portion of the blame too. Being tired is no excuse for me. Bowen still gives it some, every single game and Antonio so why can’t the others. Even if they are sulking about tactics, it’s unprofessional the way they have seen out this season. The way Paqueta has performed, I’d be surprised if there were any offers for him this summer. The way most of them have given up this season, definitely does not sit right with me and I can’t put all that blame on Moyes tactics, transfers etc.

  • Paul says:

You are a Spuds supporter who has a chicken on a beachball

  • Clacton Rd Iron says:

Bar the rogue Spud what a set of accurate summaries of how it is at West Ham.
Just don’t get what all these Media Luvy Dahlings see in Moyes.
Merson says he doesn’t care about stats – ask him if those entitled Gooners who I remember absolutely hating on Arteta not so long ago, if applying the same time yardstick for Moyes would be absolutely fine and ask no questions of a Manager with 3 league wins in the last 17

  • David says:

The players and manager hasn’t earnt there money since January 2024 , they have conceded over 5 goals against virtually all of the London rivals , this team is full of so called professionals l have seen more skill passion and ability over the local park
They are now relegations fodder next season., with the exception of a few players l would sack the rest

  • Nick says:

Sullivan is the problem – Grant, Allardyce, Bilic, Pellegrini, Moyes – what a track record. And by all accounts the new ‘chosen’ one is a client of Sullivan’s favourite agent. Look at the way this was handled and the dreadful transfers he has been involved with – Ings being one.

There’s no end of the dynasty insight as junior will probably inherit the shares.

  • Terry says:

Alan shearer was the biggest mouthpiece when he wanted Ashley out, moaning every week on MOTD when West ham supporters ask for something better he lays into us, what a hypocrite COYI

  • Frank says:

I’ve been a west ham fan all my life. And I absolutely 100% agree with all the pundits. Our fan base has become an entitled, embarrassing spoilt bunch of children over the last few years. People blame the negative football at the club but nothing is more negative than listening to fans moan about moyes. Once moyes has left, and the club go back to being the same old West ham that can barely stay in the league every year with the odd run in the championship. We all know what will happen, instead of actually admitting we were wrong about moyes we will then direct the blame straight at the owners. They’re telling us to be careful what you wish for, for a reason!!! Being a successful club that plays attractive football that is outside the top 6 is clearly difficult.

    • Alan Nicholls says:

For years ..during early August ..top 4 finish…pushing into Europe…unrealistic expectation can only come from those with no idea of how these things work .

      Close this site down.

It’s cost us our best manager of the last 60 years.

  • Bonzo says:

I love the way the media portray all West Ham fans as having the exact same point of view. Whichever point of view they don’t agree with or whichever is the most controversial point of view I normally. When they say West Ham fans don’t want this or want that etc as if we all think or want exactly the same things.

  • dorsetdano says:

The be careful what you wish for argument is lazy. Last season the pundits were having a go at Wolves, Forest, Villa, Everton, Southampton and Leeds for sacking managers. Both Leicester and ourselves were praised for sticking by our managers, where everyone was saying David Moyes and Brendan Rodgers sides will both be OK. Well we did survive, but a lot of that in my opinion was down to Declan Rice. This season since the Arsenal away game, when we played well; but were also extremely lucky, they had thirty attempts at goal to our six, we have played poorly with a few notable exceptions!

Our record in the last seventeen Premier League games reads won three, drawn seven lost seven, scored 23 conceded 40! Compared to most other Premier League clubs we have only had a few players out injured, but because of an ageing and small squad we have struggled big time. The football we have played has been uninspiring and our tactics and response to going behind has been lets continue to play the same way, because eventually it will work. Well it clearly hasn’t worked. Our supposedly talented youngsters have been ignored. We desperately need a change and lets hope Lopetugui is West Ham’s equivalent of Unai Emery rather than Nathan Jones

  • Phil says:

Excellent article, hits the nail on the head.

  • D.f.butcher says:

If you can keep your head while all about are loosing theirs

  • David says:

Let’s say a big thank you to Moyes Saturday. He’s won us a European trophy but he’s had his day, the game has passed him and like all premier league clubs we move on. Let’s back the new guy whoever he is and give him a decent chance.

  • Alan Nicholls says:

    Hi
My first home game aged 8, October 1967. WHU 3-4 Stoke City. We were 3-0 up at half -time. The West Ham way! Please don’t tell me I haven’t seen enough games.

David Moyes should be walking around the pitch receiving applause from all sides of the ground on Saturday…and awarded by a new 3 year contract.

Nobody could manage progressively through the “Moyes Out” fringe movement.

We have just had the most successful 4 years in my lifetime, all things considered.
No flirting with relegation and beating Spurs and Arsenal away, and Man U every now and again. That used to be good enough.

So where did our unrealistic expectation come from?
We’ve had the popular ex player manager….Bonds, Redknapp, Curbishley, Bilic.
We’ve had the ex Real Madrid / City manager Pellegrini.
We’ve had the Ex Chelsea maestro and manager, Zola and Grant.
    We’ve had Sam Allardyce.

We have just had 4 years of stable progression and our Chairman (super fan) David Sullivan should have been able to enjoy and be rewarded for his immense input.

Oh no. Unrealistic expectation super quick, and based on no common sense derails progress.
Sullivan and Moyes do not deserve such disrespect.
When we are bottom 3 at Christmas…who you gonna call?

I actually think this website should question how representative it is?

    Thank you for reading.

  • Hammerpete6 says:

I seem to remember Shearer really venting on MOTD when Newcastle were floundering, and their form did not include anything as dire as 70 goals conceded, 7 thrashings of 4,5 and 6 goals, only three wins in the four months since Christmas. I think fans are entitled to be dissatisfied with that.

  • Robert says:

Agreed David and Tony. Let’s show what West Ham supporters are all about, a different class.

  • Me says:

Good grief! The media love the cheeky cockney chavs.
