Sir Bobby Charlton has been the latest football player sadly diagnosed with dementia, the news comes days after the death of Nobby Stiles, who was also part of the 1966 England World Cup-winning team with Hammers Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst.
Tragically Bobby Moore became the first member of the team to pass away in 1993 after losing his battle with bowel cancer. Alan Ball passed away from a heart attack in 2007 while Ray Wilson died from Alzheimer’s disease in 2018.
Gordon Banks died from kidney cancer in 2019 and West Ham’s own Martin Peter passed away the same year after losing his long battle with Alzheimer’s
Bobby’s brother Jack succumbed to a long battle with lymphoma, passing away at the age of 85 in July this year.
Roger Hunt 82, George Cohen 81 and West Ham’s Geoff Hurst 78 in addition to Bobby are the only remaining four members of the 1966 England team that famously beat West Germany 4-2.
