Moyes against big six plan

|

David Moyes insists that UEFA plans to reward ‘big six clubs’ who win the FA Cup with Champions League qualification are simply wrong, maintaining that every team should receive the same opportunities.

The Daily Telegraph reported over the weekend that there were plans afoot to reward the winners of the FA Cup with a Champions League place, but only if they are a club with history in UEFA competitions.

As a result, a team like Crystal Palace, who have qualified for this year’s semi-finals, would not be rewarded with a Champions League place if they won the competition. By comparison, if Manchester City were to win the tournament and finish outside of the top four, they would get into Europe, because they have a strong UEFA co-efficient ranking.

Moyes was asked about the proposals after the Hammers’ 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday and he rallied against the proposals, insisting that they simply fly in the face of fair play in football.

Quoted by The Daily Mail, he said: “We talk about being inclusive in football, that means to give all the teams the opportunity to get there.

“If a smaller side won it, we’d expect to be treated the same way.

“Maybe if I was at a top-six regular, would I want that? I don’t think most people see that as the correct format to go. It should be on merit.”

West Ham moved into the top six with their win over Everton on Sunday and remain in with a real shout of qualifying for Europe this season.
