Jarrod Bowen’s international career is surely ended following his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the up and coming Nations League Fixtures.
Whilst there was an outside chance of Bowen, 29, being selected following his omission from the World Cup squad last summer – largely based on his early season form – Tuchel has stuck with convention and not selected a player from the second division.
Which seems a pity, but the price Bowen probably knew he’d pay for sticking with West Ham following relegation.
On the positive side, no less than four of West Ham’s first team squad have been selected for England’s under 20 group, as confirmed by the club web site:
“Four young Hammers have been included in the England U20s squad for a U20 Euro Elite League triple-header.
Airidas Golambeckis, Finlay Herrick, Ezra Mayers and Divine Mukasa have all been named in the Young Lions’ squad by new England U20s head coach Darren Moore.”
All four have played first team football for West Ham this season: The call ups probably reflect the enhanced opportunities the quartet have seen following the Hammers relegation.
Had West Ham remained in the top tier it would seem unlikely that the four would have seen enough game time to warrant selection – so every cloud does, indeed, appear to have a silver lining: Unless you happen to be Jarrod Bowen, whose 22 caps and one solitary goal in an England shirt could well conclude an international career spent almost permanently playing fiddle to Bukayo Saka. More’s the pity.
