One player originally viewed as crucial to West Ham’s hopes this season has yet to truly find top gear. Kris and Martin have already highlighted the issue in previous articles, and his struggles for form have reportedly surprised many inside the club.
The player is none other than Taty Castellanos.
After being labelled a key figure in the club’s promotion push, expectations were high following a summer in which the Hammers rejected a reported £40 million bid from Everton, largely due to the difficulty of sourcing a replacement so late in the transfer window. The decision reflected the club’s belief in Castellanos’ importance, with the Argentine expected to be one of the Championship’s standout forwards. However, the campaign has not unfolded as many anticipated.
One goal in eleven league appearances, along with four assists, suggests that his overall impact has fallen short of expectations, particularly for a player seen as the focal point of the attack.
Supporters could point out more favourable form during the club’s brief sojourn in the Carabao Cup, three goals in three, yet it’s the league that counts this season.
The player’s frustrations have also been highlighted, picking up four yellow cards along the way and missing a penalty that would have secured a point against Charlton Athletic.
Castellanos has never been an out-and-out prolific goalscorer. Instead, his game is built around intelligent movement, relentless work rate and the technical quality that allows him to link play effectively and bring others into attacking moves. Those attributes made him a success in MLS and earned him opportunities in both La Liga and Serie A. Yet for much of this season, West Ham supporters have seen only glimpses of those qualities. Too often, the 28-year-old has struggled to impose himself on matches, with his influence coming in spells rather than consistently across 90 minutes.
The challenge for Castellanos is clear. The flashes of quality are there, but West Ham need more than occasional moments.
If the Hammers are to achieve their objectives this season, the Argentine must become the dependable attacking presence the club believed they were keeping when they turned down significant interest in the summer.
Could Castellanos Leave West Ham In January?
There are suggestions that a number of players will be moved on in the January transfer window, including Álvarez, Magassa and Cornet, and there will be inevitable interest in Mavropanos, albeit the club are keen to retain the Greek defender.
Castellanos may also find himself in the shop window too, if the club can find a suitable replacement.
With a reported weekly wage of £37,500 (based on a 50% reduction from his PL weekly salary), Castellanos is one of the club’s biggest investments.
For Nuno, persisting with a high-earning striker who is struggling for both form and goals is becoming an increasingly costly gamble.
Even more frustrating for the Portuguese head coach is that the club do have a forward on their books who is scoring for fun in the Bundesliga, on loan at Werder Bremen: Niclas Füllkrug, eleven goals in nine so far. That chapter’s closed, yet some will say hindsight’s a wonderful thing!
I guess it suits the narrative of the various recent articles on Taty to dismiss the 3 League cup games, yet they were all against teams at our level or above. So it is unfair to omit them. 4 goals and 4 (at least) assists in 14 games (not all of which he started) is just average and not really a story. I’m no great fan of the guy, but give him a break!
