“Do I ever doubt my methods? No. I always trust in what I do because I have 35 years in this.

“I don’t think that because you lose four games you must not be confident. In this moment I trust more than ever what I do because it’s not the first time that I am doing this work, not the first time in my career that we have bad results, every club has bad results in one moment of the season.

“It is not good to start with bad results but we are absolutely confident we are going to reverse it. I am not worried about statistics, I am worried about trying to find the team to play well and win the game.”

It has taken one month and four Premier League defeats for Pellegrini to learn the real West Ham way as he launched a staunch defence of his attacking style.

“It is more important to have points against Everton, but the best way to do it is to continue the way we are doing, and ­improving that way,” he said.
