Claret & Hugh has learned of potential investors who could look to acquire David Sullivan’s shareholding in West Ham, pending the ongoing investigation by the Independent Football Regulator.
There remains understandable concern amongst Hammers supporters over why Daniel Křetínský has yet to take up the opportunity to purchase part of Vanessa Gold’s shareholding and increase his stake in the club to 43%.
However, our understanding remains that this is still the intended outcome, even if the process is taking considerably longer than originally anticipated.
Sullivan’s Shares Attract Interest
It is when it comes to David Sullivan’s shareholding that the situation becomes particularly interesting.
Claret & Hugh understands there is interest from more than one party in acquiring the chairman’s stake should the opportunity arise.
One name that has been suggested is that of billionaire property developers David and Simon Reuben.
The Reuben Brothers have been mentioned as part of a potential consortium that could look to acquire Sullivan’s shares, and the prospect is perhaps not as fanciful as it might first appear.
Why The Reuben Brothers Make Sense
On paper, acquiring a significant stake in West Ham would make considerable sense.
The Reuben Brothers are among the biggest property investors in London and previously owned a 50% stake in the original Stratford City development, the huge regeneration project surrounding what is now the London Olympic Park.
Although they sold their interest in the development in 2006 following a well-publicised dispute with the Mayor of London, their long-standing links to Stratford remain significant.
That history becomes particularly interesting when viewed alongside West Ham’s long-term ambitions regarding the London Stadium, which is projected to lose around £19 million this year.
Should opportunities arise in the future involving the stadium itself, the Reuben Brothers’ background in large-scale regeneration projects could make them logical investors.
There is undoubtedly more to come on this story.
Should the Independent Football Regulator’s investigation ultimately impact David Sullivan’s position, it is becoming increasingly conceivable that his shareholding could eventually change hands.
Staveley announced a few weeks ago that they (she and the Reubens) were looking for another club to invest in. Was it all just hot air? Seems unlikely.
Is it possible that they might divest their stocks up north and invest them back down south if the potential of returns are greater?
I’m pretty sure they have increased in value since they were purchased from Ashley.
Looked up these guys for info and Google Gemini tells me that they own 14% of Newcastle United…..
Pretty sure the rules would block someone owning shares in two PL clubs simultaneously. Not sure about PL + Championship, but next year (hopefully) it may be an issue. IIRC 10%+ ownership starts getting problematic.
Is this even allowed? The Rueben Family are owners at Newcastle United?
Should be OK for a PL+Championship combo as long as the ownership level is less than 10% (in each case?). They own 14% of Newcastle. Next year season though….. ????
It’s explicitly banned by FA, Premier League and EFL. No way they would limit holdings in both clubs to <10%. It’s just speculation, although they loaned Staveley the money to buy 10% of Newcastle so the rules haven’t been enforced properly in the past. Now there is an IFR can’t see this happening.
