Report: Wales international on Irons wish list

Allen in his Liverpool days

The Hammers are this morning again being linked with a move for Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen.

The news has been broken by Wales on line and reported at https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/west-ham-express-interest-in-stoke-city-player-ahead-of-january-transfer-window/ two sources that are usually reliable.

It is not the first time the Wales international has apparently been on the Hammers radar but it could happen this time with a host of first-team players likely to leave the bet365 Stadium next month, as manager Michael O’Neill looks to slash the club’s wage bill.

The 29-year-old central midfielder has made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Potters this season and has been a full international for Wales since 2009 earning over 50 caps  and represented Wales at Uefa Euro 2016, helping the team to reach the semi-finals.

Newcastle, Wolves and Burnley are also believed to be interested in the former Liverpool player who is out of contract in 2022 and expected to cost between £10- £12 million.

Big improvement on what we’ve got – Good player with a decent engine – get him in !
    Maybe part-ex Sanchez, lol.

    Next level my ….

  • Dave says:

Just what we need, a short, slow, ageing centre midfield player!
Great player 7-8 years ago when he was at Swansea.

    • 29?Ageing? Didn’t seem to affect Snodgrass at around same price

        Hugh
        Snodgrass is an ageing,slow player.
It’s just his workrate is good and sometimes his corners and set play’s.
I still wonder how he get’s in the team.

        • James Gunn says:

Precisely, Snodgrass realistically isn’t good enough. Sure he works hard but you need quality as well (and pace), which he often lacks.

  • Richard says:

We sell average players , left with limited amount of squad, struggle for 4 months , then look at average players that cost more and wages are higher, why?

  • Claret says:

Why would we consider buying a 29 year old player we need younger players with pace & aggression for our midfield forget him & if we cannot buy a decent player then utilise the under 23’s why is it that other teams seem to play younger players from their youth teams but we insist on spending money on average or past it players

  • DuqueDeAlba says:

We could also bring back Cullen. Same profile, don’t you think?

  • johnham1 says:

Hugh, anyone seriously thinks we are interested in Allen is someone who sees average as good. We have absolutely no interest in him. I also see a lot of articles on a defensive midfield, we actually need a box to box midfielder We have Rice who is our DM but we dont have a box to box player to complete our midfield two. I would be happy to wait until the summer for the right one. I think we need a good no 2 keeper and a winger/striker over the Christmas period.

  • Simon Barham says:

We need a box to box midfielder with pace and power .. Joe Allen is 30 in less than 3 months and he’s 5ft 6, so he’s not going to be much use at heading away set pieces! ..
