Staveley may be the figurehead, but who is really behind the takeover bid at West Ham United

Image for Staveley may be the figurehead, but who is really behind the takeover bid at West Ham United

In yesterday’s statement from Vanessa Gold, the mystery partner relating to Amanda Staveley’s bid was finally revealed, Ashland Forest Capital Partners.

So, the first question on every West Ham supporters lips was “Who!?”

The firm, according to their website are a US‑based partnership built on 35 years of working together, led by Peter Bernick and Tom McCauley, who’ve spent decades raising capital, running businesses, and turning underperforming assets into stronger, smarter organisations.

London stadium is now the venue for a massive, two – month three-way tussle

But the other key question fans are asking is simple, Where’s the money coming from?

Ashland Forest’s investment power comes from large family offices, Institutional investor. High‑net‑worth partners and Private equity networks.
Bernick’s profile shows that he previously served as Chief Investment Officer for a major family office, giving him direct access to long‑term capital sources. McCauley has managed and deployed funds across more than 100 investments in gaming, hospitality, entertainment, and sports sectors backed by serious financial players.
Ashland Forest believe football (I won’t say soccer!) is undervalued commercially compared to US sports.
They look for clubs with:
• Strong identity
• Loyal fanbase
• Room for commercial expansion
• Untapped global reach
• A need for long‑term planning
West Ham fit that profile perfectly.
The hope is that they could bring long‑term strategy, commercial muscle, and help with recruitment analytics (yet I believe this has already been greatly enhanced over recent years).

For me the most important point is that they want to create a real sports‑ownership experience.

Bernick owns the Chicago Hounds rugby franchise, giving Ashland Forest hands‑on experience in fan engagement, club branding,
matchday operations and building a stronger identity.
The Hounds became the first ever team in the history of Major League Rugby to remain undefeated through the season and were crowned 2026 Champions in June. If that success was emulated at West Ham, few supporters would be complaining.
Yet, even after taking all of that into account, I remain unconvinced that Staveley and her consortium genuinely have the financial muscle to step up as major shareholders. West Ham’s operating costs are enormous, and the club has no appetite for further ownership turbulence. By contrast, Křetínský brings experience from Sparta Prague and a reputation for stability, he is unquestionably the safer option.
That said, Staveley may still have a card up her sleeve. As a deal‑maker, PCP and Ashland Forest Capital Partners are relative financial medium-weights and  could well be fronting for a sovereign wealth fund or a heavyweight corporate backer with serious billions to invest.
But right now, it’s all speculation, and high‑risk speculation at that, which is hardly palatable from a West Ham perspective. I’m firmly in the Křetínský camp, and with his 30‑day window now open, plenty of supporters will be hoping he makes his move sooner rather than later.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

It’s just the worst time for all this uncertainty isn’t it? The squad and team are a mess and from what seemed like a long needed period of stability and serious management giving hope for the future we are back to a lack of clarity and inaction.

Just want Sullivan out of this club. Disappointed Kretinsky hasn’t made good on his word to buy the Gold shares.
Seems like a lot of stalling on club affairs or maybe an attempt to remove club assets, i.e players and reduce the overall club value to encourage new investors. Either way get Sullivan out, get owners who want to build up the club and invest in its infrastructure and players.
