The picture to delight West Ham fans on eve of season opener

As a boost to morale ahead of West Ham’s season opener tomorrow, unveiling a new, young, exciting signing is without parallel.

Arne Engels has been unveiled officially wearing the shirt and joins West Ham’s campaign to regain their Premier League status too late to start tomorrow but quite possibly on the bench.

West Ham’s new number 7 has had a full pre-season and already a couple of competitive games under his belt north of the border.

In his first words to the club web site, Engels showed his evident enthusiasm for the task ahead:

“It feels amazing to be here, so I’m delighted and I can’t wait to get started,” said the Hammers’ new No7. 

“It’s a really nice project to come into and try to to go back to the Premier League. That’s the big goal. I think that’s everybody’s goal and it’s just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins. Hopefully, we’ll see that it’s going to be a good year then and I’m looking forward to the next ones. 

“I’m just looking forward to meeting all the fans at London Stadium. I’m looking forward to this challenging season, but hopefully we can make it a really good one, so let’s go for it!”

Kudos to Nils Koppen who made it clear that Engels was his number one target: As a new arrival himself, West Ham’s head of recruitment had a lot to lose had he failed to bring in West Ham’s top transfer target. There’ll be a feeling of relief that the Hammers do have a creative element to their midfield once again after the sale of Matues Fernandes early in the window.
